Bug Description

Saturday night at about 03:00 UTC I noticed that an update to my system (Hirsute / 21.04) would no longer properly work with my NVidia RTX 3060; I was left in very low resolution mode. When I ran Additional Drivers, the screen indicated that I had manually installed graphics drivers and I could not select the official and tested NVidia drivers. I am assuming these "manually" installed drivers were a part of a system update as I did nothing to install any drivers on my own.

I found a suggestion to run "apt purge nvdia-\*", which I did. When I rebooted, I was able to select the "Using NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-460 (proprietary, tested), and my screen resolution and general behaviour seemed fine from that point on.

In case it doesn't come through in the uploaded files, here are the lines from /var/log/dpkg.log relating to my purge:

It may be worth mentioning that nouveau doesn't recognize the RTX 3060 (I understand that this is a very recently released video card).

The NVIDIA driver hasn't changed since 2021-04-02 so it was probably a different package that broke things. Most likely the proposed kernel version 5.11.0-14.15-generic you are running. Less likely caused by the Xorg 2:1.20.10-3ubuntu7 update.

affects: xorg (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

Please try rebooting into the previous kernel version: 5.11.0-13.14

Just tap Escape early during boot to get to the grub menu and it should be in there.

Daniel, I rebooted into 5.11.0-13.14 as you requested and everything seems OK, display-wise at least. I also fired up Additional Drivers and that seems to be in order (ie the official NVidia driver).

Anything else I can try for you?

I can't really see anything relevant in the logs, other than proof that you either installed or tried to install the nvidia driver from the NVIDIA installer on April 10, at 20:23:47. This is not recommended, or supported.

Chris,

Please only install NVIDIA drivers from the 'Additional Drivers' app in future. If you install drivers from elsewhere then that's unsupported and can cause bugs which we can't fix.

To recover in this case you will need to figure out how to fully *uninstall* the manually installed driver, and then reinstall using the 'Additional Drivers' app.

Sorry I forgot to mention that...

After the boot where the screen resolution was messed up, I tried:

1. The recovery boot (nothing improved)
2. Installing the NVidia driver manually (terminated with error, no
improvement)
3. Apt purge (resolution back to 1920 x 1080, seemingly ok)

So just to be completely clear, the failed install of the NVidia driver
was an attempt to repair the problem that had already happened.

Again sorry for the confusion!

OK, thanks. Does that mean the problem is still active even with Ubuntu's official Nvidia driver?

Not at present. The problem went away immediately after running the apt
purge and then rebooting, and has not reoccurred since. So I'm not
suffering at all at this point. I reported it in case my situation
provided useful information for others.
