Bug Description

I upgraded to a Ryzen 7, 24-RAM ASUS computer because I thought that my 2-year-old Dell laptop was the problem. However, I froze during Zoom yesterday and during coding today after fresh-installing Ubuntu 20.04 on Sunday. I also froze mid-attempt to submit a bug report after the coding freeze. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The freeze on this system and the other system was similar. But on this one, the screen goes black, the music keeps playing and I am unable to take any actionable steps other than a hard reboot.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is mostly about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future users from hitting the same bug.

I suspect a Support site would be more appropriate, eg. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu. You can also find help with your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

hard reboot? if the music is playing the kernel would be running and thus you should be able to direct kernel via SysRq commands.

Please look in /var/crash for any crash files and tell us what you find.

Also, next time the freeze happens, please:

1. Wait 10 seconds.

2. Reboot.

3. Open Terminal and run:

   journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

I will upload one of the many files that are in the /var/crash directory. There are 12, 3 different files per crash. Let me know if you want me to upload another or a different one.

I should have made it clearer; please don't attach crash files to bugs. We only need to know their file names right now. To see if any are relevant to this bug.

Please also remember to run through the steps in comment #4.

Crashed this morning, while only my browser was up, right after booting it up. Here is the resulting file from the #4 terminal command. Thanks.

Thanks, that seems inconclusive right now. Please repeat the steps in comment #4 a couple more times.

Please also open the 'Extensions' app and ensure you only have the three Ubuntu extensions in there.

Ok will do, thank you. I do only have three extensions (Desktop Icons, Ubuntu AppIndicators, UbuntuDock), all of which are enabled. Thanks I will run comment 4 again when the freeze happens again. Thanks.

Back-to-back. Freezes. I wasn't meaning to try and freeze it again but I did in a similar way, uploading image files to libreoffice impress. I will keep uploading when they freeze. Thanks

Thanks. There are two interesting things there:

* Lots of messages relating to:

  profile="libreoffice-soffice" name="/opt/amdgpu/lib/...

so that suggests a driver issue triggered by LibreOffice.

* A kernel crash in rtl8821ce (wifi).

Unfortunately each issue occurs only once so I can't see a recurring pattern yet. Maybe start by uninstalling/disabling the AMDGPU driver in the 'Additional Drivers' app?

Blaise Mariner (bmariner) wrote :

Thanks Daniel, and I will continue posting the prevboot files to see if there is something that we can pinpoint. As for the amdgpu drivers, those were not automatically detected when I installed ubuntu (that is, if I go to the additional drivers, only the wifi chip is detected and not the graphics displays that were needed to be installed). So I went to the AMD site and downloaded them myself. This was needed, as without them I could not attach external monitors, control the display, etc. I imagine uninstalling these things would result in the same problem. Thoughts? If not, I will continue to post the prevboot in the future. Thanks for all the work you do!

Yes we would need you to uninstall the driver temporarily. Especially if you did not get it from Ubuntu. Just as a test.

Ok. And when uninstalled, just wait to see if it will freeze up (and if it does, save to prevboot)? Or? Thanks

Thanks. Unfortunately I still can't see any possible causes of a freeze in those logs...

But I wonder if we can rule out Xorg. Please try selecting 'Ubuntu on Wayland' from the login screen, just before you enter your password. It's the button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

Wow, thanks. Finally success in comment #28 which shows amdgpu kernel errors and then:

Nov 10 11:45:58 blaise-vivo gnome-shell[1908]: GNOME Shell crashed with signal 11

So it sounds like the problem is originating in the kernel driver: amdgpu

Thanks Daniel. I will uninstall and reinstall my amd driver. Is there a reason that the AMD driver does not show up in the ubuntu additional drivers app and is there a way that I can get one to appear there? What other recommendations might you have? Thanks so much

It doesn't show up because it's not "additional". It's open source and included with Ubuntu.

Interesting. When I installed ubuntu I had to install it from the Amd website or else I was stuck with poor gpu functionality.

Oh. Indeed it looks like your amdgpu kernel driver is a custom install:

 amdgpu, 5.6.0.15-1098277, 5.4.0-52-generic, x86_64: installed

Sorry, that makes it something we can't support. :(

Is there a way to get a driver that you do support? Thanks so much.

Revision history for this message
Daniel van Vugt (vanvugt) wrote :

Yes, but you would first need to uninstall the driver you installed from the AMD website. And I don't know how to do that.

Alternatively, reinstall Ubuntu from scratch. If you find Ubuntu 20.04 doesn't support the GPU then maybe try Ubuntu 20.10 (although that one is only supported until July 2021):

  https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

I would probably recommend staying with Ubuntu 20.04 though, and then logging new bugs about any problems you encounter. It's supported until 2025.

Hi Daniel, the driver that I have with ubuntu's support (the one that is downloaded automatically) is giving me some problems. No freezes yet (it's been around 6 hours).

The first problem is that the display does not seem to be claimed.

[sudo] password for blaise:

This I believe leads to the following problems in which the night light does not work. (when I had the driver installed from the amd website it did work). And similarly, I cannot attach an HDMI external monitor to my computer anymore, where previously with the other driver I could.

Please let me know what steps I can take to resolve these issues. I have gone through the internet and many suggestions just tell me to install the driver from the amd site. but I do not want something that Ubuntu does not support or freezes on me. Thanks. Blaise

I would also like to add that the night light function and HDMI external monitors seem to work in windows if I select to boot into that OS. Thanks.
