Bug Description

I tried both kernels (5.022 and 5.023) but my new laptop (Asus zenbook 14) cannot boot and had to return to kernel 5.019. The error it gives was something of the following: "boot - ALERT! ...uuid... does not exit! Dropping to shell."

I am using Linux Mint as a distro.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. While running an Ubuntu kernel (not a mainline or third-party kernel) please enter the following command in a terminal window:

apport-collect 1852575

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

Hi Martin - Thanks for the bug report. Please follow the instructions mentioned in comment 1 so that we can have a better view into what's going on.

In the meantime, can you tell us if you use full disk encryption with LUKS/dm-crypt? Thanks!

Dear Sir / Madam,

I tried to type in: apport-collect 1852575, in the terminal, but the output
I got was: ERROR: The python3-launchpadlib package is not installed. This
functionality is not available. Apologies if I have done something wrong,
since I am new to Linux, but it is probably not the answer you were looking
for. Could I maybe type something else so that you can have a better idea
of the error? Currently, with the kernel version 5.023.93 (I think), I can
boot normally. However, I still sometimes get annoying flickering of the
display, it is rare, but happens.

Kind regards,
Martin

Hi, Martin.

Can you download the .deb files from https://people.canonical.com/~cascardo/tpmrevert1/ and install them using sudo dpkg -i *deb? Then see if you can boot from that kernel?

Thanks.

Dear Sir / Madam,

I downloaded and installed the files, but I could not boot from the this
kernel (5.024). it gave me an error that I need to load the kernel first,
not sure what that means. I booted again from 5.023.

Kind regards,
Martin

So, can you boot from 5.3.0-23? I thought the initial report mentioned you could not boot from 5.3.0-23.

And are you using secure boot? That would prevent testing the kernel I gave you as it cannot be properly signed being a test kernel. If that is the case, can you disable secure boot and test?

Thank you.
Cascardo.

Dear Sir / Madam,

Apologies for the inconvenience. I was unable to boot into kernel 5.3.0-23
till yesterday, when I received an update concerning this kernel.
Currently, I can boot into this kernel. Hence, the only minor problem I
have is rare flickering of the display, which I had ever since I was using
Linux Mint, though the instances
of the display flickering tend to reduce with the newer versions of the
Kernel. Everything else seems to work fine.

In that case, should I do something, or leave the things as they are?

Kind regards,
Martin

Hi, Martin.

Can you describe which update concerning kernel 5.3.0-23 you received?

Dear Sir / Madam,

In my update history, the update was written as:
package: libnss3
version: 2:3.35-2ubuntu2.5

Though, when I was updating it, I can definitely remember this was shown as
a kernel update of 5.3.0-23. After installing it, I was able to boot into
kernel 5.3.0-23.

Does this help?

Kind regards,
Martin

So I suspect you are using a hwe-edge version of the kernel that had another problem related to module signing.

What is the output of the following command?

dpkg -s linux-image-5.3.0-23-generic | grep Version

Thanks.
Cascardo.

Thanks a lot, Martin.

That means you were probably affected by LP: #1852581, which affected the hwe-edge version of the 5.3 kernel and was fixed during an update. That explains how you got an update for that kernel and it fixed your problem.

Thanks a lot for helping us finding out what was the case for your issue. I am going to mark this bug as a duplicate of referred bug that had already the fix released.

Regards.
Cascardo.
