Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-generic

With linux-2.6.22-*, if I set a vga mode (with vga=792 for example) in grub (tried with menu.lst and within the boot menu too), the graphical splash screen shows and X works, but there's no virtual consoles (even boot messages don't appear). If I switch to virtual console with Ctrl+Alt+F*, a cursor is blinking in the corner at 640x480 res.

If I switch to linux-2.6.20, everything works as expected.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it, because your description does not yet have enough information.

1. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a boot with vga=792 enabled and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
2. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

I have the same problem and I have seen it on two 7.10 systems. One with a standard 7.10 install the other is a 7.10 server. I have tried a number of different vga modes (771, 791, 792, 793) and I get no visible output during bootup (just a blank screen) but on the standard system X works fine but CTRL+ALT+F[1-5] gives me a blank screen.

Here is what my grub/menu.list contains.

# defoptions=vga=791

I expect you will see this on any 2.6.22 system but I've only tested it with the following kernels.

2.6.22-14-generic
2.6.22-14-server

If I add 'splash' to the defoptions I get output. On my server system I don't want the splash screen but I would like a higher video resolution like 1024x768.
