There is a slight chance this is a kernel bug, so I am assigning it there.
I've seen a few reports of people having trouble with analogue VGA connections not detecting EDIDs, resulting in low resolution.

Anyone affected by this bug, please:
1. Try newer kernels like https:/
2. If a newer kernel does not fix the problem then open a new bug at https:/

Or even simpler, just try booting Ubuntu 20.10 from USB and tell us if it has the same problem:
SatishVSS (sssatishv) wrote : Re: [Bug 1833855] Re: i915: EDID not detected on VGA resulting in low resolution 1024x768 | #8 |
Now I am using the 20.04 LTS Version. I don't want to upgrade to the 20.10.
My VGA Cable is working fine. There was no issue when I used 14.04 and
16.04, in which it was abled to display the 1440x900 resolution.
I came across many who faced the same issue with the 20.04 version. But
none found any solution.
So, please send me a patch to clear the issue.

I wasn't asking you to upgrade, only to try booting from USB temporarily. Or follow the instructions in comment #6.
SatishVSS (sssatishv) wrote : | #10 |
I checked with 1920x1080p screen and it is very fine. Abled to display the
resolution. But why it is unable for the 1440x900p.
My monitor is LG-20MP48HB-BB model. I tried with dell FHD mintor at which
it worked fine.
Why the 20.04 LTS is unable to display the desired resolution?
It worked when there is 14.04 and 16.04.
If I set the resolution at 1440x900p some times it is hanging. And some
times it is reverting back to 1024x768.
Please send a patch to my system to make the issue clear.
I will try to boot the 20.10 later. But issue is with my 20.04. So please
solve it.

Try downloading all of these:
and then in a Terminal window run something like:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb

Sorry that site changed its links overnight. Try these:
Basically just download the ones that DON'T have "lowlatency" in the name. And then:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i linux*.deb

I tried to boot with 20.10.
Grub error : can not find 'grub_platform' is displayed and stopped going
further.
You can check the attachment here to find the error.
I downloaded the 20.10 image and made it bootable with the startup disk
creator in 20.04.
Please show me the solution to boot from it.

The instructions in comment #16 don't require making a bootable disk or 20.10. You just install those packages in your 20.04 system.
SatishVSS (sssatishv) wrote : | #19 |
I tried installing those packages in my system. But the issue was not
solved. So, I decided to boot with 20.10 once and check then. But when I
boot with the 20.10 usb, it's shown that error. Please let me know the
issue with that thing.

If you have any problems booting Ubuntu 20.10 or making bootable USB sticks, then it would be best to not discuss those here.

I have been querying you since many days regarding my issue.
You are showing some solutions. But none helped me any much.
And you asking me not to discuss the bootable disk issue here.
Then please show me a single shot solution which clears my issue.

I installed all those packages which you have told me to do.
After that a new thing is appearing before booting. Please check the image below.

That's not a bug, that message is normal. But the fact that nothing else has replaced it on screen is a bug...
Try restarting in recovery mode, uninstalling those packages you just installed and then try a different more stable kernel like:

or

It appears Xorg (or the kernel) can't detect the EDID of your monitor via the VGA connection:
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): EDID for output VGA-1
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): Printing probed modes for output VGA-1
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz e)
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "800x600"x60.3 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz e)
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "800x600"x56.2 36.00 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync (35.2 kHz e)
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "848x480"x60.0 33.75 848 864 976 1088 480 486 494 517 +hsync +vsync (31.0 kHz e)
[ 55.901] (II) modeset(0): Modeline "640x480"x59.9 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync (31.5 kHz e)
So only standard modes are provided in order to avoid guessing and damaging the monitor.
In order to allow the system to detect your monitor properly, please use the DVI port instead. If you can't do that then try a different VGA cable. But a monitor connected via your digital port (DVI) would be best.
P.S. You also seem to be using the 'oibaf' PPA which is not supported by Ubuntu.
