Can't select multiple files or folders on desktop with left click

i m using Xubuntu 7.10 i have one problrm that i can select multiple Files with left click and Draw ractangle while i have open File
Browser in XFCE but i cant do that on Desktop Screen i have top Click Files or Filders one by One By Holding Ctrl
