[xubuntu 8.10] Cannot select multiple files or folders using left click (on the Desktop only)

Bug Description
Binary package hint: xubuntu-desktop
Pressing left click on an empty place on the Desktop and grabbing doesn't show the selection rectangle to select multiple files. I must select them by pressing Ctrl+Each Icon. This problem happen in Xubuntu 8.10 only on the Desktop.
