This happens to me too with Ubuntu 18.04.1 and saods9 7.5+repack1-2, although previously it worked with no special problems.
When I run it with root permissions ("sudo ds9"), it works.

Ok, bug #1737112 is related: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/saods9/+bug/1737112
I installed miniconda3 a few days ago. When I removed it from the path (commented export PATH="/usr/local/miniconda3/bin:$PATH" in my ~/.bashrc file), I could start ds9 normally (the reason it worked with sudo permissions is probably because it didn't have miniconda3 in the path).

The bugged version of ds9 is still installed on ubuntu with the apt-get command. The software I'm trying to run that uses ds9 will not acknowledge ds9 if it is installed from source because of the different resulting structures in the different installation types. Can this new version of ds9 be propagated to the apt-get update list? Thanks.
