Ubuntu-18.04 Installation/Upgrade freezes/does not work.

Hello all!

I have been tirelessly trying to install Ubuntu-18.04 since the last 2 days, but every attempt turned out to be negative. Apart from other GUI based problems, which I am reporting here.

When mounting the iso using the inbuilt Disk Image Mounter utility, and attempting the GUI base upgrade method (from within Ubuntu-16.04.1), I get a pop-up saying "Oops! There was a problem running this software. Unable to locate the program".

When mounting the iso and attempting an upgrade through the terminal, the "gksu sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade" command leads to a blurred screen prompting for the password and then does nothing. Replacing gksu with sudo returns "cdromupgrade command not found".

When booting from a live flash drive (created from the same iso), the installation freezes at the network page after I enter the password for my wifi. When using a wired connection, the network page does not appear. The installation freezes at the page where it asks for Normal or Minimal installation. It even has options for Install Updates and install Third-Party Drivers etc (the 3rd page of the installation). I have tried different combinations of options, but the installation never proceeds further. Sometimes, it even freezes at the keyboard selection page (the 2nd page of the setup).

I have already verified the integrity of the downloaded iso through a checksum verification. It is perfectly OK.

Current OS: Ubuntu-16.04.1 (latest kernel, as per apt-get)
Machine: MSI GV62 7RD

I was trying to install Ubuntu 18.04 on my ASUS X556U, But the installer freezes everytime during the language selection or Ubuntu logo. My friend had the same issue who tried to install 18.04 on his machine. 16.04 installs without a problem. We both had NVIDIA GPU in similar. There wasn't any issue with the iso either, the checksums match. Tried with different rippers etcher,rufus and ubuntu's startup disk.

Ubuntu 18.04-desktop-amd64 version freezes when I trying ubuntu on my new laptop, "Acer Predator Helios 300 Core i7 8th Gen - (8 GB/1 TB HDD/128 GB SSD/Windows 10 Home/4 GB Graphics) PH315-51 Gaming Laptop". The ubuntu freeze after like 1 min or so. I am not able to start Libra Office either, it freezes in-between.

Hi I found work around from the link below

1. When you see the loader to "Install Ubuntu" etc ... press "e" and edit a line:
Replace "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" and press F10 to boot.

Then after the installation is complete, you will have to reboot.

2. This time you will now encounter the GRUB. Again, press "e" and edit a line:
In the line that starts with "linux", add "nouveau.modeset=0" at the end of that line.

Your Linux should now boot.

3. After this, you need to install the nvidia drivers. Reboot. And then it's done.

Thank you!It was the nvidia graphics that was causing the problems then.
Did it resolve your issue?

I can confirm this is an issue for the HP Pavilion Power 15cbXXX line too.

The workaround from @gdeepankar works like a charm! Thank you, hopefully this will be fixed on the next release.

Btw, just installing the nVidia drivers did not do the trick for me, I had to modify the grub configuration to set nouveau.modeset=0 in the Ubuntu entry. Was this supposed to happen automatically?

Please choose the memtest option at the boot menu and let it run for at least 15 minutes and let us know if it finds any errors. Also when you say the install freezes, do you mean just the installer window, or the whole computer? Does pressing the caps lock key still toggle the caps lock light?

No errors were found during memtest.

Whole Computer Freezes after couple of minutes after boot from USB. Probably nothing to do with installation window.

Caps lock does not toggle. Had to hardboot through Power Key Button.

Does the freeze still happen if you just let it sit there without using the installer? Or if you use other things like do some web browsing? When it does freeze, hold down the sysrq key and press R E I S U B and see if that reboots the computer.

For me, The freeze happens when the installer asks to connect to a wifi network , after that the next page doesn't come. Actualy only ubiquity freezes at that time, so I can open firefox and browse web.

I'm also having this problem. I tried @gdeepankar solution but without success.

I'm able to click in continue in language selection, but it freezes on keyboard layout selection.

I also have a nvidia card (GTX-1050). It's a Acer A715-71G laptop.

I had the same issue and @gdeepankar didn't work for me too.
The issue disappeared when my BIOS was updated.

I am having the same issue. I have Acer nitro 5 and Acer aspire 7 both with Nvidia GTX 1050. The installation freezes at network page. I am able to move the mouse cursors around but not select any of the option.

Hello All,
My laptop model is: MSI GE62VR6RF Apache Pro
Graphics Card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060

My installation screen got stuck in keyboard selection menu itself. I tried doing --> " Replace "quiet splash" to "nomodeset" and press F10 to boot"
But after that i am getting error message as below:
"nmi watchdog bug soft lockup cpu stuck"

Can you please suggest any possible soltuion to install Ubuntu ?

I have an ASUS X556U(J).
It has an i7-6500U and NVidia GeForce GTX 920M.
Had the same problem myself. The installation would freeze on a random window, usually the language selection.
Simply, update your BIOS and this should resolve the issue.
I successfully installed Ubuntu 18.04.1 with no problems.

I have an MSI GF63-7RD Gaming Laptop with i7-8750H and NVIDIA GTX-1050Ti.
I am able to install ubuntu 18 on my laptop following the instructions here(https://gist.github.com/mari-linhares/cef4cb3440408e44963d1447a7db5ae0) . But after installation it was always using NVIDIA Graphics and draining the battery so fast. So I tried to change it to Intel HD Graphics in nvidia-prime. I changed it and when I rebooted, everythings broken. The system not loading nvidia drivers at all. Only Intel HD Graphics is working.

I confirm that using:
nouveau.modeset=0
as written by Deepankar Gupta in #5 solves that the installation no longer freezes.

The same issue is seen on both Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10.

Also getting a freeze during installation of ubuntu desktop 18.04. As Leandro wrote: "I'm able to click in continue in language selection, but it freezes on keyboard layout selection." The environment is a packet.com bare metal server running VMware ESXi 6.5, size c1.small. Install Ubuntu as guest VM. This may be reproducible if you go to packet.com and try the same configuration. After multiple attempts, the keyboard seems to freeze at some point every time. Not consistent.
Then, switched to ubuntu server 18.04 instead of desktop. It had a different set of installer screens. The server setup successfully made it through to completion, so the problem was just on the desktop version.
