I confirm that using:
nouveau.modeset=0
as written by Deepankar Gupta in #5 solves that the installation no longer freezes.

The same issue is seen on both Ubuntu 18.04 and 18.10.

My graphics card is an Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060, cpu I7-8750H
