This looks strange, the postinst should only be triggered when you upgrade from an really old version, but the logs suggest that it's a fresh install. Is there anything else uncommon on your setup (like upgraded from an other version, third party repos like PPAs)?

Nothing uncommon really. Just a usual setup with no third party repos. I'll
try to reproduce the problem and let you know if I could.

Probably triggered by installing ROS, which pulls in vast amounts of stuff with pinned versions.

I have the same problem, and happened after installing the new ros2.

I agree that it's probably ROS related. That's a common element to my computer. Somewhere, I thought I saw something about ROS support for OPENNI being discontinued. ROS used openni to communicate with the Microsoft Kinect 3D camera.

I tried to search for it, but the last meaningful openni posts are from 2017.

I just upgraded from Ubuntu 14.04 / ROS Indigo to Ubuntu 16.04 / ROS Kinetic and have been seeing these errors since the upgrade. I have no clue whether the root problem is in Ubuntu or ROS.
