Bug Description

When running the mutiny under ubuntu mate 16.10 many applications crash when you click on the screen level menu.
I should have made a complete list but caja and libreoffice are examples. If it helps close to 100% of the crash reports from my id were caused by this problem.
The problem stops if I switch to another theme.

Martin,

Yes, I am describing clicking on the Global Menu, if that is the correct
term for the top most menu. That is not happening in my current environment
(Ubuntu Mate 17.04). Since then I also had switched Panel Layouts away
from the "Mutany" to "Ubuntu Mate".
I switched back to the "Mutany" layout just now to see if I could recreate
the problem. It still is a problem. The "Mutany" layout does seem to be the
source of the problem.
The global menu populated by Caja does not react to clicks, and causes Caja
to terminate. A few seconds later (maybe up to 5) I get a crash report
saying that Ubuntu as had an internal error.

Thanks for looking at this.

I also experienced this bug in Ubuntu MATE 17.04. When using the "Mutiny" layout, several apps crashed as soon as I clicked on an entry in the menubar. All the apps that crash have in common, that they display the menubar not inside the application window but at the top left of the screen aka "global menu" (e.g. Caja or Eclipse). But surprisingly Gimp works as expected even though it also uses the global menu.

This bug is also described at https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/ubuntu-mate-16-10-top-menu-crashes-all-the-time/10896 and it seems to be a duplicate of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/topmenu-gtk/+bug/1630515
