Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

The USB devices (mouse, printer) connected to my Toshiba Satellite M-40 laptop running on Gutsy started to randomly stop working today. I've had Gutsy installed for just over a month now, and had been running Feisty for 6 months with no problems with either device -- no idea what caused this to stop working, although I did install several updates for Gutsy today. Rebooting usually brings back functionality for a bit, but the devices will eventually get dropped -- it has happened as soon as typing the user name in GDM, but often while typing something in the actual Gnome session, e.g. into internet browser search fields, terminal, or OpenOffice.

I noticed this first with the mouse -- it is a Microsoft Standard Wireless Optical Mouse. Unplugging and then plugging back in does *not* help, even to a different port. The printer, a Samsung ML-1740 laser, also gets dropped. I managed to grab the outputs from lsusb before and after the failure, as well as dmesg and Xorg.0.log, will attach.

Again, I have had *no* USB problems with Ubuntu for seven months, and I have no idea what could have happened to trigger this. My keyboard and touchpad still work after USB devices stop working, so I am able to continue using the laptop.

The last few lines from dmesg could be helpful:

[ 232.188000] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: host controller process error, something bad happened!
[ 232.188000] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: host controller halted, very bad!
[ 232.188000] uhci_hcd 0000:00:1d.0: HC died; cleaning up
[ 232.188000] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 4
[ 232.192000] drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: removed
[ 232.192000] usb 1-2: USB disconnect, address 5

Edit: I tried plugging in another mouse (Logitech Optical Mouse, wired), with the same results.

I've got exactly the same problem on my HP Compaq nx6110.
I use Kubuntu on my laptop for about 1.5 year and before I've never had this kind of problems.

I used Gutsy for a while before I noticed this problem and had no problems before upgrade.

Same problem here on an Asus A6R.

Using irqpoll boot option (in /boot/grub/menu.lst, in boot kernel options) solved the problem.

I'm having the same problem. All my USB devices as fine for months then, suddenly, my M$ wireless mouse stops working. The funny thing is, the keyboard and the mouse use the same receiver, and my keyboard is fine (yep, that's right, I'm just using a keyboard :s). It's just the mouse that's affected. I've tried the irqpoll workaround as suggested above, but it didn't have any affect. Boo.

Hey everyone,

Just an update, my motherboard died a few days after getting that error, and
I ended up getting a new laptop instead of paying over $500 to replace the
MB. So if the same thing is happening to you, it could very well be a
hardware problem. Back-up your data while you still can. Will close this bug
soon.

I believe it's not necessary a hardware problem. In my case (HP NX6110) it's probably some bug related with ipw2200/networkmanager and probably also WPA/WPA2 (wpasupplicant), because I started using WPA yesterday and at the same time my problems with USB started. Even more: when I disconnect with my WPA AP and turn off wireless card (Intel Pro Wireless 2200) everything start working just fine. Really weird.

Please, change importance of this bug to high, because very weird things are happening with my USB right now. My mouse like dying, when switching from vt to X server even when wireless is disabled. That's not all - when I booted today to kubuntu 7.10 LiveCD in which, as fair as I remember, everything was working fine my USB devices was behaving very weird as well. I often have to turn off my machine (rebooting is apparently not enough) to restore USB ports in my NX6110 (but in most case rmmod uchci_hcd && modprobe uhci_hcd works).
Right now I'm very disappointed with (K)Ubuntu 8.04 - ACPI doesn't work anymore (it works perfectly in 7.10 and earlier) and acting very weird (constantly turning on and off my display etc.) and now this bug, which makes my USB devices unusable.
My experiences with 8.04 are even more sad when you consider that I'm using 8.04 since Alpha 3 and I was reporting ACPI problems in march, but without any response (here's bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/acpid/+bug/198141).
Please fix this as soon as possible.

Well, I'm really sorry, but it looks like this is rather hardware related problem. I was very frustrated yesterday, because it looks like kubuntu's fault, but as it appears it was a coincidence. I'm almost sure that my laptop have some problems with connections somewhere on my mainboard, because my USB controller dies when I'm moving my laptop. The same goes for wireless card (I get "ipw2200: Firmware error detected. Restarting." in dmesg) and sometimes even with my touchpad. Sometimes my computer even hangs on X loading.
I thought it was Kubuntu live, because I probably just didn't move my laptop when I was on LiveCD. Right now I believe it's almost certainly invalid bug report. So sorry once again for taking your time.

apart from comment #12 I don't see how this report is related to wpasupplicant. I'm therefore invalidating this bugtask for now until additional indication is provided what could be done in wpasupplicant about this.

TBH, I believe this is a kernel issue. You might want to consider taking this to the ubuntu kernel team.

@Eric Kuzmenko: could you please explain why you added the additional tasks, and why you marked the network-manager one 'in progress'?

As a rule of thumb, whenever you add a new task, change a status or importance, and explanation for the actions should be added in.

Given that Sam the original bug reporter commented this was due to a hardware issue as well as biskicinek's most recent hardware issue comment, I'm going to close this report for now. For those of you still experiencing issues with the most recent Hardy Heron 8.04 release please open a new bug report. Thanks.
