Bug Description

New install of Linux Mint. Used the package manager and downloaded Lazarus. On loading IDE, I get 9 messages saying XXX .lpk packages missing. I see this was an error in Bug #1068109. Looks the same. Cant compile a empty project.

Thanks Wallace

Thanks for reporting the issue. We are already aware of the issue in Debian, but the solution is not as straight forward as you would assume.

Any idea on how to get it to run or another install option ?

Thanks Wallace

Re-reading that other bug and your original words I wonder if you
installed the recommended packages (and not only the depends).

What are the packages from the lazarus suite that you have installed?

Hi Paul

Thanks for the reply.

I have delved into Ubuntu and Linux many times over the past 10 years and each
time, got frustrated and dumped it.
Linux has come a long way and the Linux Mint looked like a good alternative to
Windows.

But once again I used the built in Package Manager and installed Lararus and
it crashed. I do delve into the command line on occasions but I'm not to clued
up on this.

The second frustration I have is that in searching for answers to problems,
there can be 5 completely different solutions. Depending on which flavour of
Linux you have depends on which solution, but that is not spelled out in the
solution summary so invariably they do not work.

My thought was that with the Linux Mints GUI, all these bits would have been
integrated into one version control and it would be relatively problem free.
No terminal involved. Lets hope we get there.

I'm really looking for MS alternative as Win 8 and 10 are just way over the
top.

Anyway I can help in fixing this problem?

Thanking you

I don't know what GUI Mint is using for installs, but try to find which
of the following packages you have installed:
lazarus-1.6
lazarus-src-1.6
lazarus-ide-1.6
lazarus-ide-gtk2-1.6
lazarus-ide-qt4-1.6
lcl-1.6
lcl-utils-1.6
lcl-units-1.6
lcl-nogui-1.6
lcl-gtk2-1.6
lcl-qt4-1.6

Thanks
Paul

Hi Paul

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. The Netpad I was using ended up
with a directory in my home directory called something like NY8XCh which had
thousands of files. Each time I tried to look into it, the computer just
chugged away for hours.

I installed an SSD drive in it to speed things up and I back to a fresh
install.

Here is the install procedure. Looking at the description for each of the
packages does not really give a full description of what dependencies is
requires or whether is is a full program or not. I would assume that it should
load what it requires to make it work.

Thanks Wallace

Just wondered if you have received my email. It did have a doc attached so it

Does the icon in from of lcl mean it isn't installed (I don't recognize
these icons)? I agree with you that "it should load what it requires to
make it work", but it does that if your system would install Recommends
by default (which is the default in Debian, so I can expect you do that
if you consider the current behavior a bug). If the default in Mint is
to not install Recommends, please complain with Mint to fix that, all
Debian maintainers expect Recommends to be installed by default.

Please install the lcl package and confirm that your problem goes away.

I started a discussion¹ on the pkg-pascal-devel@l.d.o list to discuss
this issue. We agree that we should improve the situation.

Hi Paul

Posted on Linux Mint Forum:-

Hi I have just installed Lazarus. After the Lazarus install, the compiler
could not find the fpc files. After many hours of we searching and forum
chats, Paul from bug.launchpad.net came to the rescue and the problem was that
the lcl component was not included in the install.

Can this be be fixed please.

On a similar note, the install package options are very confusing. Nowhere
does it say "This is the main package which must be installed first". These
are optional packages that belong to the program XXXX. As a first time user to
Linux, this is very annoying.

Thanks for your help.

The GUI that Linux uses is Mate.

Cheers Wallace
