Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I installed a fresh install of kubuntu 7.10 after the upgrade from 7.04 made my system completely unusable. Still I get this message that I should upgrade to newer version of kubuntu. My /home wasn't deleted in the version upgrade so that might be the reason for this message.

Also the upgrade tool was completely unusable for me, it got stuck while installing the new packages on top of 7.04. Perhaps you should at least do some checks if all the packages can be installed before actually doing the install. Currently the installer messes up peoples computers.

Same here. I made a fresh install yesterday and today I a message popped up saying that I should upgrade to the latest version. When I click OK the updater works for a while and then recognizes that I already have 7.10 installed and exits.

Hi

I already installed Kubuntu 7.10 before the alpha release. Kubuntu is trying to install the new version though. It has done this twice so far always ending up on a error screen after some of the step are done. It finishes with the Error message telling

"Your system is up to date"

And a button to report a bug or close.

Also confirming this bug. With a fresh install of the latest Kubuntu, adept still tells me that's there's a new version of the OS. Running update-manager gets the samessequence of events alyssonbrito describes.

Same problem her also when:
a) Upgrading from feisty->gutsy.
b) Doing a fresh install from gutsy CD.

Here too, though not really a big deal, just a bit surprising.

I also confirm this bug. Adept keeps asking me to upgrade version, although i've made a completely fresh installation of Gutsy. At the end, the upgrade manager concludes that the system is up-to-date (as it should), but keeps asking me about upgrading version every time i make a package upgrade.

I have a similar problem. Yesterday I upgraded feisty->gutsy on a dell inspiron 640m by following the steps in the adept manager. And apparently it finished ok, althought some things left functioning. But today, the adept notifier asked for the upgrade again. I accepted to dowload the new version, and after the step that configures the repositories it stopped and said that it could not continue because the system already was up to date.

I experience the exact same thing with a fresh Kubuntu: I am told that a newer Kubuntu is ready, and during the upgrade process it reports that I have the newest version, and there is a button to record a bug. It also tells me that libportaudio0 is unsupported by Canonical. The bug is reproducible on my computer. What looks weird also, is that the upgrade tool is running the task "Preparing upgrade", and immediately afterwards it restarts the upgrade task and runs "Preparing upgrade" again; and then it discovers that I already am running 7.10.

Here too. I installed fresh from the 7.10 i386 live cd, opting to format the partition I was installing it to (I do manual partitioning) and the updater shows up in the taskbar claiming a newer version is available. As with the others, when I allow it to do it's thing it realizes that I've got the most recent version.

Identical problem here. Fresh Kubuntu 7.10 install, but it wants to upgrade again...to 7.10. And fails of course.

I might add, that I can no longer boot my system properly...the root filesystem gets mounted as readonly, and the /var partition is not mounted at all for some reason...I'm not sure if this is related, but I've literally done nothing else since booting other than install a few extra packages before I noticed the upgrade thing.

Also the same problem here.
After disabing "actualizaciones aun no publicadas" (umpublished updates?) and "actualizaciones no soportadas" (backports?) the problem seems to stop.

Exactly the same problem as the original poster - I retained my original /home (from 7.04) during the install.

An update must have just come out, because I don't get that prompt any more.

Well, the bug has apparently disappeared for me. I reinstalled anything related to apt and did a few more upgrade attempts. After I rebooted the last time I didn't have the problem with upgrade notices regarding a new distro. I didn't keep track of it all so I wasn't much help to anybody trying to solve the problem.

Installed Ubuntu 7.04 from shipit CD in its' own partition to dual-boot w/WinXPSP2; subsequently updated 7.04 online, no apparent probs, except updater did NOT prompt for upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10. Being a Gutsy Glutton for punishment & al., as well as habitually curious, I used the extra 7.04 install 2nd chance/backup partition I had preserved on my HD to install Kubuntu 7.10 from CD to try it out as well (single HD, GRUB-controlled tri-boot: Ubuntu 7.04, Kubuntu 7.10 & WinXPSP2).
Post-install 1st update of Kubuntu 7.10 stopped in the middle w/ error, then insisted an "upgrade" to 7.10 (!) was available, apparently in lieu of the slew of updates Adept updater had downloaded previously for Kubuntu7.10. Scratched my chin momentarily, said "OK - let's see what this does" - oughta be fun, right?
"Upgrade" from Kubuntu 7.10 to Kubuntu 7.10 'completed,' then error pop-up states
"Your system is up-to-date
There are no upgrades available for your system. The
upgrade will now be canceled"
Hope this helps in updating the Help for the hopeless (a.k.a.: hack newbies like myself!)
For what it's worth, since the OSes all had their own separate HD partitions, I think the Kubuntu 7.10 Adept updater/upgrader definitely has the bug you guys have described more succinctly than I; I don't see how it may have mistaken any Ubuntu 7.04 stuff in a separate partition & subsequently tried to "upgrade" Ubuntu 7.04 to Kubuntu 7.10 & then changed it's mind to not "upgrade" Kubuntu 7.10 to Kubuntu 7.10 at the last moment; but since I went ahead and attempted this rather redundant (& perhaps a bit silly) 'tri-boot undocumented option', and have verbosely publically epistled it on this friendly tech forum, obviously my brain cells have just been wiped & my mind's as out of place as a boiled egg in a koala bear's bum.
   Thoughts?
