[Inspiron 5559, Realtek ALC255, Speaker, Internal] No sound at all playback write error (DMA or IRQ trouble?)

No sound, either on headphones or internal speakers. Have been all over forums, tried every fix I can find. The installation is new, and it's on a new Dell 5559.

Sound is not muted, and I believe the settings are correct, but it's hard to be sure, as each answer I find seems to have slightly differing advice, albeit a lot in common.

Would be really helpful if your best and most complete FAQ answers were locked in one place, sorted by Ubuntu release: otherwise there's no way to tell which helpful suggestions/solutions are really correct.

The kernel is way too old. Try the latest 4.4.x or 4.5-rc kernel at first.

If it still doesn't work, give alsa-info.sh output for further analysis.

Hi,

you're saying that the kernel for the current long-term release of Ubuntu, version 14.04 (Trusty Tahr) is too old?

Does that mean I have to upgrade to Ubuntu 15.04? Or can I just do a kernel upgrade?

Yes.

At best, build the kernel by yourself. If the problem is still seen with the latest upstream kernel, report back here.

I tried upgrading to 4.5-rc, but got errors. I followed the instructions for 64-bit at:

The download and unpack were fine, but the upgrade got firmware errors.

Hi Folks,

I hope there's someone out there who can help me, 'cos now I've messed up my Linux installation.

I followed the advice above to open a ticket at bugzilla.kernel.org. driver sound/ Alsa. The upstream ticket number is 112721.

Advice from them was to upgrade the kernel, as the version in Ubuntu 14.04 was 'way too old'. I didn't even know you could do that, but I found instructions here:

I followed the 64 bit instructions: the download and unpack were fine, but the update failed. However, it did manage to mess up my PC. I have attached a file containing the all the lines I executed and received on the terminal.

First, I would really like to know how to repair my 14.04 installation.

Second, does anyone have any ideas on how to safely upgrade the kernel so that (maybe) the missing audio can be fixed.

At the moment, it boots up with multiple error messages (kernel panic, not syncing etc. etc.), then switches itself off. If I try powering up again, I get 3 options:

Ubuntu
Advanced Options for Ubuntu
System Setup

If I pick Advanced Options... I get offered all the kernel boot options, plus recovery versions of each. NB the kernels include the new 4.5-rc, for which the upgrade failed.

At this point, I choose the old kernel (3.13.0-74.118-generic), Recovery mode.

Then I get a menu offering cleanup, package repair and all sorts of other stuff. By this point I'm totally out of my depth.

What should I do at this point? Is there any way to repair the installation from the original 14.04 CD?

Luckily, before the kernel upgrade wrecked my machine, I'd backed up the /home directories.

After a lot of grief, I managed to install 15.10 from a flash drive (initially, the UEFI BIOS wouldn't let me boot from the CD or the flash drive).

Changing the kernel from 3.13.74 to 4.2.0 seems to have nailed the problem. I now have sound and HDMI output.

Hope someone will close this bug report, as it doesn't seem to be an option for me..
