Bug Description

I can install Tribe 4 and upgrade to the candidate release with no problems. A fresh install of the preview release leaves the same system with no Usplash and my video card and monitor are identified incorrectly.
Hardware specs: ATI Radeon 7200, Proview 900W 19" wide screen monitor.

Hi! Can you try with Gutsy Release Candidate, that was released today ?

Thanks!

All of the problems I described are with the release candidate. The RC will load and run but it is a blank black screen all the way to the desktop.

My work around is to load Tribe 4 and update all packages to the RC. I think something is wrong with xserver in the release candidate.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt.

Thanks in advance.

Testing the RC now I am able to get to the desktop without getting the monitor error, although the monitor says it is processing/adjusting the image when first booting. And the resolution is way off.
Took a picture of that:

Attached is xorg.conf

I could not delete xorg.conf since I am running off of live cd (I'm linux noob)

Oddly it recognized the correct resolution as 1680*1050. Not sure why it is not showing up on monitor incorrectly.

It's recognizing your video card has an integrated Intel one and not an ATI.. Thanks for your report.

My video card is an intel G965 X3000. It is doing that correctly.
The only thing similar between original poster and me is that we both got monitor errors that would not display anything on the screen.

Andrew, your issue is not related to the original reporters since you're using a completely different model of video card. Please enter a new bug on it.

I have the exact same problem as the original poster. But I don't think it's related to Xorg, because the problem occurs way before X is started.

The symptoms: If I install Gutsy Beta and upgrade to current, it works normally. If I install Gutsy RC (and optionally upgrade, doesn't matter), the splash doesn't work (black screen all the way until GDM loads), and the booting is MUCH slower (several times slower). If I remove the "splash" boot option from GRUB, it boots quickly again, without any problems. So this appears to be a problem with Ubiquity or Usplash, but not with Xorg.

My laptop is an Acer TravelMate 4502WLMi, 1280x800, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700

For those who are seeing this problem, could you please send the output of "lsmod |grep fb"? I'm wondering here about the relation to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/129910.

I do not know how to get the output of "lsmod |grep fb". Can you tell me what I need to do?

Onestone (onestone) wrote :

"lsmod |grep fb" produces no output here. But I managed to solve the problem. The contents of /etc/usplash.conf were initially "xres=1280 yres=1024", which the laptop display can't handle. I changed that to "xres=1280 yres=800", and then had to execute "sudo update-usplash-theme usplash-theme-ubuntu", which fixed it.

Also, this bug seems to be the same as #150930: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/150930

Hi,

I have the same problem on the RC I installed today. I have a ThinkPad T40 laptop, with a Radeon 7500 video card. No usplash either at all.

"lsmod |grep fb" gave me a blank prompt.

My usplash.conf is the following:

# Usplash configuration file
xres=1280
yres=1024

I'll try and change it to be 1024x768, but, I think I read somewhere that my laptop can support a higher res (the one in usplash.conf), and that's why I upgraded so soon. So that's why possible usplash.conf was configured to be that.

Nope, that didn't work either. No usplash still.

Same issue as described above. Just downloaded & did a fresh install of Gutsy RC today (10/16). Followed Onestone's advice above and fixed it. My laptop is an HP pavilion zv6000 running an ATI Radeon Express 200M.

solution

-edit the file /etc/usplash.conf
-change the numbers for your screen resolution
-then you make update de initrd.image with this comand "sudo update-initramfs -u"
-probe the splash in a terminal "sudo usplash -c"
-then comeback to desktop "ctrl+alt+F7"
-reboot

i have the presario m2000, ati radeon xpress 200m
its works....!!!

This is the same bug as (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/gutsy/+source/ubiquity/+bug/150930), they have a similar solution (but it doesn't always work) there.

All, I downloaded the most recent iso version using the "complete list of download locations" and pulled a bittorrent version dated 18 October (if you check the date of the automated download system, you'll find the iso date is earlier than the 18th.

Make a long story short. Reinstalling the latest downloaded iso resolved this and related problems. I reported this originally in bug 150930.

Hi,

This bug was reported by many before Gutsy was released. The cause and solution were found months ago on the ubuntu forums. Is a fix for this bug going to be coming for Gutsy?
