Bug Description

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Ubuntu 7.10 beta, ubiquity 1.5.18

While running the installer, after custom partitioning 5%
through "Installing System" the installer stops working (without a
crash - just no activity). The Live-CD system is still usable (I write
this on the system). The kern.log ends with these three
lines:

Sep 30 21:25:39 ubuntu kernel: [ 3643.416000] __open_file: branch 0
lower_mnt_idx NULL! Set to df8f7a00
Sep 30 21:25:39 ubuntu kernel: [ 3643.416000] __open_file: opened
f4eec110, string.pyc
Sep 30 21:25:39 ubuntu kernel: [ 3643.416000] __open_file: branches
bstart 0, bend 0

but I don't if that is relevant. Other potentially interesting
information: /var/log/installer/debug report version 1.5.18 and
otherwise only complains about the locale failing to fall back to "C"
from "sv_SE.UTF-8" due to missing files.

The install CD is OK (I checked the media before trying to install).

Some work has been done to the new partitions:
ubuntu@ubuntu:/var/log$ df -h

/dev/sda7 15G 165M 14G 2% /target/home
/dev/sda2 12G 11G 455M 97% /target/windows

I retried using ubiquity --debug with the same result.

/Patrik

I have had exactly the same problem whether using the AMD64 or i386 Live install of the Gutsy beta. The problem seems to be with the partitioning tool itself - if before you try to install you use gParted to manually set up the partitions it also crashes after applying the change and then doing a rescan. The changes are OK, they show up correctly, and running checks on them shows them to be clean. Unfortunately since the Live install insists on formatting / and /boot I was still unable to install Gutsy - during the install I pointed it to the partitions already created, it then hung at 5% as described above. If necessary I have saved my log files from the installs if needed, and also allowed the bug reporting thing to report the crash.

I think this is what you are looking for, all lines in the saved
syslog file with bug in them.

Good luck. I ended up installing AMD64 Feisty, and will do an upgrade
in place when I get back to towm

Cheers

What do you mean by that, don't change the name to /windows instead of
what it initially reports (/dev/sda1 or something similar in my case)?
