Bug Description

This same Wi-Fi adapter used to work very well with Ubuntu 9 or 10, I can't remember... but now it just drops some packages and sometimes the whole connection every now and then.

Diogo Schneider, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the test did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested exactly shown as:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.19-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Curiously though, it seems my WiFi connection has been stable since
yesterday, when I installed the new kernel. So I have added the tags you
asked and marked the bug as Fix-Commited.

What are the next steps for me now, do I keep running this kernel until
it's replaced by automatic updates or should I remove it at some point?

Thanks,
Diogo

Diogo Schneider, this is not Fix Committed as defined in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status . Despite this, the next step is to fully reverse commit bisect from kernel 3.13 to 3.19-rc3 in order to identify the last bad commit, followed immediately by the first good one. Once this commit has been identified, then it may be reviewed as a candidate for backporting into your release. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#How_do_I_reverse_bisect_the_upstream_kernel.3F ?

Please note, finding adjacent kernel versions is not fully commit bisecting.

Thank you for your understanding.

Christopher,

Sorry, but I couldn't dissect it back to the lucid kernels, the packages
just won't install right, popping a lot of errors. I have tried to supply
some of the dependencies myself, but to no avail.

I could though find another clue, one of the packages these older kernels
need is called wireless-crda, which I suspect is the package which would
contain the wi-fi 'drivers'. Maybe the lack of dependency on this package
would explain why the newer kernels don't work right with this hardware.

Cheers,
Diogo

Diogo Schneider, just to clarify, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1408821/comments/6 you weren't asked to commit bisect back to Lucid. Instead, what is being asked is a reverse commit bisect, in order to find the good/fix commit issued between 3.13 (Trusty) to 3.19-rc3.

Oh, I see. I forgot to tell you that even 3.19-rc3 presented the bad
behavior after a while. It starts with high latency between packets, then
somehow the whole connection is compromised. Only Lucid worked flawlessly
with this wireless adapter.

The major problem here is that the issue is very intermitent. I guess
that's why it was untracked until now, probably.

My bet still lies between those missing drivers in the current kernel and
the wireless package which is not required anymore.

Diogo Schneider, just to advise, there are no missing drivers. If you had drivers that were missing, you wouldn't have wireless access at all. As well, wireless-crda is simply an agent, not a driver, as noted in https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/wireless-crda .

Despite this, could you please provide the missing information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LinuxWireless ? Please ensure you copy the questions, and then post the answers here as well.
