In gutsy the vmware-player is not installable because of broken package.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vmware-player: Depends: vmware-
E: Broken packages
I have checked the repositorys I am using and I have enabled all the once that are included with standard gutsy upgrade.

That is the error I also had when upgrading to a newer kernel (2.6.22-13)? If you downgrade to 2.6.22-12 all should be well.
Is this package going to be kept up to date? Wil there be an official fix for this package (in universe) when gutsy is released?
Cedric Schieli (cschieli) wrote : | #12 |
An updated package has been uploaded to my ppa and will appear soon in the repository.
I'll try to keep this up to date after gutsy release if necessary, but I hope something can be done officialy
tbjablin (tjablin) wrote : | #13 |
How could this be declined for Gutsy? Isn't there some sort of policy in place that says all packages should be installable? Will it at least be documented in the release notes that vmware-player is no longer working?
Bart Verwilst (verwilst) wrote : | #14 |
I think it's better to have a not-so-well-tested version of something that at least installs and works for several people, than something that's just not installable/usable _at all_.

It seems vmware-player is removed from gutsy entirely:
See bug 151424.
I hope we can expect a vmware-player 2.0 package pretty quickly.

The re-install loop is a more general problem, either in apt or in launchpad (see Bug 152317)
For the failed re-install, I can't reproduce it.
Can you purge the package, install it, then issue /etc/init.d/vmware stop ?
If "Virtual ethernet" keeps failing, can you issue rmmod vmnet manually ?
Richard Ayotte (rich-ayotte) wrote : | #33 |
Yes, you're right.
I noticed that /usr/bin/vmnet-natd was running so I killed it and the
re-install worked afterwards. My VM was not completely shutdown when I
initially re-installed and it caused the vmnet-natd to hang on to the vmnet
module.
Thanks again,
Rich

What happens for me is the install script quits halfway through, you apply the any-any update below and it will restart the install script for you and finish the installation.
Works Perfect Everytime.

Thanks for the package! I need to run MSSQL for work, so it has been a big problem for me since I upgraded to 7.10 last week.
I was able to get it installed (I think), but I get an error during config (below). Apt-get fails, but I am still able to run vmware alright. The only issue is, when I try to install something else with apt-get, it tries again to configure vmware, which is very annoying (because it always fails). It fails on bridged networking.

Paulo: libssl0.9.7 is incompatible with libssl0.9.8, and the kernel modules for a gutsy-era VMware Player won't compile for the Maverick kernel regardless.
The vmware-player package is not currently published in the Ubuntu partner repository. You'll get a better result installing from upstream:
