Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

After updating Feisty to Gutsy Tribe 4 on Acer Travelmate 4600, ATI Radeon Mobility X700 (PCIE) and rebooting as requested there was no way to get to login window, just "black screen" and no activity at all... Ctrl-Atl-Canc useless... Computer freezes...

Went through xorg log files but empty... Tried all fixes in forums to solve problem changing xorg.conf settings but no solution...

I changed xserver-xorg-video-ati.1.6.6.193-1ubuntu1 back to the previous Feisty one 1.6.6.3-2ubuntu1 and system is working again... No other change...

Tried installing on a PC with ATI Radeon X600-X550 AGP and get same result...

No way getting Live CD startup either...

Thanks for testing and bug reporting. Please try the newer -1ubuntu2 from http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/dpkg/ati/

That is 6.7.191-1ubuntu2, which also needs the newer xserver-xorg-core from http://users.tkk.fi/~tjaalton/dpkg/xserver/

That was fast. Thanks.

Tried on both computers and got same results.

Systems boot up fine now but compiz-fusion went nuts. Had to disable Desktop Effects.

Background went black, moving windows on desktop color background with zoomed version of themselves, all compiz functions don't work at all...

Attached xorg.0.conf

Hi,

I have EXACTLY the same issue as dnprossi with the same symptoms and similar software configuration. There is no way to get to kdm KDE login window, just "black screen" and no activity at all... Ctrl-Atl-Cancel useless... Computer freezes..., just like for dnprossi.

I am using Kubuntu gutsy gibbon with all packages dist-upgraded to the most recent version. Using Linux desktop-pc 2.6.22-10-generic kernel + xserver-xorg v1:7.2-5ubuntu7 + xserver-xorg-core v2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ub + xserver-xorg-video-ati v1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1.

I am attaching my xorg.conf

And here is my radeon driver's Xorg.0.log file.

Hi,

My radeon driver crashing issue is now solved by doing the following:

1. Upgrading my xorg-ati driver from xserver-xorg-video-ati v1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1 to v6.7.191-1ubuntu2
2. changing Option "AGPFastWrite" "true" to Option "AGPFastWrite" "false" in my xorg.conf file

Maybe only step 2 was necessary to solve this crashing problem, but it would have been undetectable without the smarter logging info from the new ati driver v6.7.191-1ubuntu2

The Xorg.0.log coming from the old driver 6.6.193 did not warn that enabling AGPFastWrite might cause Xorg lock up issues.

Thanks for your help!

Regards and have a nice weekend,

Mark Rijckenberg

Have the same problem, I'm only using the live-cd haven't been able to install it yet. After booting I get a blanc screen and the computer freezes. I have a x1300 ati card in a acer aspire 5600.
I'll have a look for the xorg.0.log and will attach it later on....

Hereby the log. This log is from booting with the live cd. I booted with the "xmodule=vesa" option to look if it would make a difference, it doesn't.

I'm getting the same problem with my newly upgraded gutsy. Tried 6.7.191-1ubuntu2 (with the corresponding core), to no avail. I'm attaching my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log,

Mark, you have a 9500 card which is quite different than the X700, so please make separate bug reports. Fastwrites are disabled by default, but in some versions they were just turned off unconditionally.

Raggar, your X1300 card is not supported by the "ati" driver, you have to use vesa or avivo (no 3D acceleration) or the proprietary fglrx (no Composite), see the wiki for more info. Please file a bug on the vesa package.

Rico, please attach files separately and as is.

dnprossi, apart from the compiz issue, is the driver working ok? For instance, does glxgears run fine?

The system starts perfectly no more initial black screen and computer freeze. Works on both pcs...

other than compiz, glxgears works fine. Tried Chess that used to work and now crashes when asking for 3d view. and Blender 2.44 seems to work fine...

dnprossi, I suggest you open a new bug on chess (and compiz?) crashing. Is a automatic crash report generated? If not, it would be good if you can get a backtrace, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

Rico, your log shows that the "fglrx" driver is crashing. You can file a bug on linux-restricted-modules. The "ati" driver does not support the X1400 card anyway.

Similar to this, xserver-xorg-video-ati.1.6.6.193-1ubuntu1 caused my screen to appear scrambled and unable to navigate through Gutsy. Downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-ati.1.6.6.3-2ubuntu6 and reconfiguring x temporarily fixed the problem.
