My radeon driver crashing issue is now solved by doing the following:
1. Upgrading my xorg-ati driver from xserver-xorg-video-ati v1:6.6.193-1ubuntu1 to v6.7.191-1ubuntu2
2. changing Option "AGPFastWrite" "true" to Option "AGPFastWrite" "false" in my xorg.conf file
Maybe only step 2 was necessary to solve this crashing problem, but it would have been undetectable without the smarter logging info from the new ati driver v6.7.191-1ubuntu2
The Xorg.0.log coming from the old driver 6.6.193 did not warn that enabling AGPFastWrite might cause Xorg lock up issues.
