Bug Description

Graphics card is Radeon HD 6770. X.Org drivers. Clean install, video works but color depth is < 24bpp. I tried adding DefaultDepth parameter on xorg.conf. Secondary card is integrated on the motherboard (Intel E3-1200 chipset). Delivers 24bpp right away, no tinkering required.

Michael P, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1338068

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

As well, given the information from the prior release is already available, testing a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

Michael Poly (mpoly) wrote : Re: [Bug 1338068] Re: Wrong color depth on Radeon HD 6770

Hi, thanks for looking into this. I just did the following:

- Downloaded latest from daily-live/current
- Created bootable USB
- Switched cables to connect monitor to Radeon card
- Booted with bootable USB
- Confirmed that the problem persists (by viewing photos with a blue sky
background and noticing the color gradient)
- run apport-collect (which posted a total of 19 logs on launchpad)

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help

Best regards,

Michael

Michael P, does using fglrx provide a WORKAROUND to this issue?

let me know if you need me to runn apport-collect while using the fglrx-updates

In case it helps: The system is dual-adaptor, dual-display AMD/Intel.
Identical Philips 233V monitors on both cards. The Intel card has
correct color depth.

Thanks, m

Well I'm calling my computer a liar... (I guess I'll now have to keep an
eye on it, lest it decides, like HAL did, to take me out)

Yes, I had noticed that the log claims 24, but it is clear when I view
a picture with a gradient that the depth is less. It is also visible in
the shading of the Unity GUI elements.

If I slide the picture across to the other monitor (same model, attached
to an Intel card), it displays correctly.
