Bug Description

First of all, I disabled my computer by attempting to fix this, so unfortunately the hardware summary attached to this report is from an unrelated machine. The problem is that when Ubuntu 14.04 boots, it sets a low color depth. This is visible because the default purple desktop background has stairstep color shading with dithering. I attempted to fix this by copying /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and inserting "DefaultDepth 24" before the last "EndSection".

Plain vanilla 14.04 can't boot this video chip at all. You need this fix before you can see the above bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/1301839

If this can't or won't be fixed, then please inform as to how we should modify xorg.conf or whatever in order to get decent 24 or 32-bit depth. In particular, at 1920x1080.

I can confirm this bug -- Looks like we have the same laptop and have the exact same symptoms, Plain vanilla does not indeed work: on boot, screen changes mode 3 times before settling on 1920x1080 -- then gives "low graphics mode" dialog on lightdm startup. Must boot with nomodeset and set mode manually for this chip. Still can't get the color depth correct either. Using xorg-edgers and oibaf ppa drivers.

Veiokej, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (with the computer you actually have the issue with) as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg 1322413

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information. As well, please note given that the information from the prior release is already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.
