Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

(I'm not English... I'll try to write as well as I can)

Hi Community!

The problem starts today, no updates, no strange happening... nothing.

Often Rhytmbox stop playing after the song finished. It doesn't play the next song... I'm using the shuffle mode.

After restarting rb it seems to work correctly... maybe a one-time error????

Bye bye!!!!

the command is: rhythmbox --debug &>rbDebug

I try to explain what I've done.
1- wait until rb finish to load playlists.
2- doubleclick a playlist: a random song is selected and played and GUI shows progress bar, seconds, and text about id3.
3- doubleclick another playlist: all ok.
4- again and again.
5- Time (10:34:42), row 340638 more or less: doubleclick another playlist. Song is randmly selected and played. But GUI doesn't know there's something playng. GUI remains as there is nothing playng.
6- wait until song finished. No further song selected nor played.
7- doubleclick on a SPECIFIC SONG: Sound works, GUI works, anithing's ok!

I'm dealing with the same issue. I upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 from a stable running Rhythmbox on 7.04 Ubuntu. After the upgrade was installed the player worked. I received recommended updates on Nov 13th (the same date I did the upgrade) and Rhythmbox continued to work. The following day, another set of recommended updates arrived, and after installation the music player developed this problem.

I'm on gutsy and haven't had this problem in some time, I'm relatively
certain that the problem only presented itself when streaming from an
ipod connected via usb however.

I want to inform you that I have also experienced this bug through Ubuntu 7.04 - 8.04 Beta, which I am using at the moment.

The bug looks like this: You start a song, it plays till one second before the end and from that point on hangs. The status is not changed to "stop" or anything, it is still "playing" but it will never play the next song. You have to double click on another song for rhythmbox to be playing again.

I have been experiencing this problem too, and have just worked out the cause (for me at least). While playing a song, if I press the stop button on my Logitech G15 keyboard and then resume playing the song, it will get stuck at the end. Keyboard Shortcuts lists this as the "Stop playback" function. Pausing does not produce the same effect.

could you describe easy steps to trigger the issue on hardy?

Hew (hew) wrote :

I just tested it and the issue has been resolved for me! I'm not sure what fixed this. I started up the Hardy release LiveCD (in virtualbox-ose) and verified that the situation still exists there. I am currently using rhythmbox 0.11.5-0ubuntu8.

To the other reporters of this bug: Since I have been the only one to say this issue is related to the keyboard media keys, it would be great if you could either confirm the keys are the issue, or that the problem has now been solved.

Easy steps to trigger this issue (on a Hardy LiveCD or unpatched install):
1) Open Rhythmbox
2) Edit -> Preferences -> enable Play Count (not a necessary step, but will easily show the issue)
3) Add at least one song
4) Start playing a song (eg. double click it)
5) Press the 'stop' media key on your keyboard partway through the song (eg. 10 seconds into a 4 minute song)
6) Press the 'play/pause' media key on your keyboard to start playing this song again from the beginning

What should happen:
The song completes playing, the play count is incremented, and the next song starts playing (according to repeat/shuffle/whatever)

What actually happens:
The song does gets to the end, but does not "complete" playing (play count does not increment), and never moves on to the next song.

Further detail:
Play/pause will press/depress the UI button, but with no actual effect (the song still sits there at the end). Stop will take the song back to the beginning, but playing it again will get it stuck at the end. The only way to resume normal behaviour is with previous, next, or by manually choosing a song.

I tried updating rhythmbox in the VM, but it locked up during the install. If others are still experiencing the issue, I can look into it further. If not, fix released!

I'm still experiencing this problem on an up to date hardy.

It doesn't seem to occur when running with the --debug flag so I can't provide useful logs.
It does however display [0x173e710] [volume_changed_cb] rb-player-gst-xfade.c:916: unexpectedly got a volume change for stream file:///path/filename 1.000000 (not fading) on every transition.

What I have noticed however is that when it happens the time indicator of the main rhythmbox window indicates for example 5:10 of 5:10 whereas it shows 2:34 of 5:10 in the notifications area when hovering over the icon.

I can't provide a way to reproduce it. It occurs from time to time without any obvious cause. Sometimes it plays days on end without occurring and when it does occur and replay the song it always goes to the next one when it finishes.
So far it has only occurred without the debug flag in shuffle mode with crossfading enabled.

If you need any more info please let me know.

biebel: This bug has already been fixed, and I can confirm the problem does not exist in the latest versions in Hardy or Intrepid. Your bug must be a different issue. Please disable crossfading as this is known to cause problems, and already has a number of open bugs (bug 242206, bug 253570, bug 270700, bug 275251). If the problem still occurs, please file a new bug report, but otherwise your problem is likely one of the reported crossfading bugs. Thank you.

I'm running Rhythmbox 0.11.6 on Intrepid. When a song gets to the end and stops, pressing the play media button does not start it playing again. I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop.

Sorry, an update.

If I am playing from a playlist it does move on to the next song in the play list and play that song. It is only after playing the last song in the playlist.

I noticed that after playing the last song in the play list the play button in the application stays pressed. Pressing the stop media button unpresses the play button so you can then press the play button again. If the play button is pressed after the song has stopped, pressing the play button will not start the selected song playing. You must double click on the next song you want to play (or press stop media button first)

Solution is to unpress the play button in the application when the last song in the play list is finished and the music stops.

Ok, I'm going to post a bug here and get it reopened.

Release: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Beta
Version: Rhythmbox 0.12.5

I've been using Rhythmbox quite a bit in the last two days and I can verify that the bug is still there somewhere.

I expect Rhythmbox to play the next song it moves to. It does play the next song a lot of the time, but not all the time. I'll just have it sitting in the background playing music while I'm searching the net or something like that. I have shuffle turned on so it will just keep going to another random song. I have cross fade turned off so I know it's not that.

What happens though is it will cycle through songs pretty well, but every so often it will get done playing a song (which are all MP3s and Oggs on a media partition I have set up) it then will even switch to the next song, but suspends play at 0:00 of the next song. Checking the progress bar and mouse over counter for the system tray icon both show the time standing still. By checking the very top bar, I can tell the song is not paused.

If I skip it forward to the next song, it will resume and play the next song. I can also resume play by manually selecting a different song or even using the previous song button. Also, if I wait long enough, Rhythmbox will eventually resume play on it's own. For and idea of how long it suspends for; as soon as it suspended, I reported the bug from the help menu inside Rhythmbox. I then proceeded to search for this bug and found it, came here and read down to about message #15 before it resumed play on it's own.

I do however have a Last FM account that is logged into when Rhythmbox is started. I even search through those bugs but they didn't seem relevant because I wasn't streaming from them for this to happen (although that doesn't mean that it isn't the problem). Not sure if this has anything to contribute to this problem, but I ended up with the biggest Compiz crash I've ever seen just a few hours ago.

P.S. Please bare with me, I'm a total noob at debugging and may need specific commands to help me through this. Going to see if I can manage to figure out how to debug (for the first time) for when this happens.

Ok, I got that debug, and am I glad it was a lot easier than I was expecting :D

There should be instances somewhere in there. I let it run till it suspended play with song switch but kept going. I wanted to record all the way till it started playing again. Not only did that happen but after it played the song, it did it again on the next song and then shortly after that is when I closed rhythmbox.

Hope this helps, and hit me up if you need something else, just keep in mind you're talking to a noob here XD.

Doesn't matter if I try to activate repeat before starting to play the first song in a list or before selecting all or while I'm playing a song, it is completely stuck in shuffle mode.

Also, the sign that is supposed to say it's in repeat or shuffle mode is very faint, just a very narrow band around that button. Wouldn't it be better to make this clearer?

Im attaching the output to stderr when I run rhythmbox --debug.

From the log file, it appears that playback paused for file /home/einar/Music/music/windows-music/EWHK.m4a after 1 sec.

You can try the following steps to figure where the issue is:

1. Rhythmbox ( RB ) uses gstreamer backend for playing audio files. This step confirms if the problem is with gstreamer or RB. Run the following commands from the gnome terminal.

$ sudo apt-get install gstreamer1.0-tools
$ gst-launch-1.0 playbin uri="file:///home/einar/Music/music/windows-music/EWHK.m4a"

This should play the audio file. If this doesn't work, the issue is with gstreamer, not Rhythmbox.

2. If the above step goes fine, the issue is with Rhythmbox. Ubuntu 16.04 LTS ships with RB 3.3. This is quite old. Try RB 3.4.2 which is the highest version supported by 16.04. Run the following commands from the gnome terminal. This should take ~ 15 mins.

Build Rhythmbox 3.4.2 from source
==================================

$ sudo apt-get build-dep rhythmbox
$ sudo apt-get install git
$ git clone https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/rhythmbox.git
$ cd rhythmbox/
$ git checkout tags/v3.4.2 -b v3.4.2
$ ./autogen.sh
$ make
$ shell/rhythmbox --version

Start Rhythmbox 3.4.2
=====================

$ shell/rhythmbox

Try playing /home/einar/Music/music/windows-music/EWHK.m4a now. If the audio gets stuck again, list the exact steps for reproducing the bug and attach output of "shell/rhythmbox --debug" from 3.4.2.

Note 1: It is strongly advisable to do Step [2] in the above comment as a new user. ( Create a new user in GNOME Settings. Log off and Log in as new user ). This is necessary since newer versions of RB ( e.g. 3.4.2 ) might install newer config formats / new database formats under $HOME which the old RB ( e.g. 3.3 ) might not understand.

Note 2: Building and starting RB 3.4.2 in Step [2] in the above comment will not disturb existing RB 3.3 installation.
