Bug Description

This bug is a regression between 3.8 and 3.11 kernel.
Since the new 3.11 kernel, there is no more network statistics on ALX cards.

This has already been discussed here : http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.network/278595
But it seems not to be fixed.

My card is an Atheros AR8161

Here is an output of ifconfig:
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:0 (0.0 B)

gnome system monitor is also affected

sami, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://support.asus.com/download.aspx?SLanguage=en&m=N56VZ&os=30 an update to your BIOS is available (217). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette .

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi,
I haven't updated the BIOS because a lot of users report bugs with the new version of the bios.
Anyway this isn't a matter of bios version.

This bug should remain open until it has been fixed upstream and backported to ubuntu

This bug is fixed as of Ubuntu 14.10beta2 which is shipping kernel 3.16.0-17-generic.
A backport would be welcome.
As a B plan we'll wait until LTS enablement stack provide 3.16 kernel (scheduled feb 2015).
