Bug Description

Binary package hint: displayconfig-gtk

Description:

displayconfig-gtk produces non correct xorg.conf file for "Xinerama" mode and conflicts with gnome-display-properties settings for "Clone" mode on Intel GMA950 graphics card on Thinkpad Z61m. Default resolution of notebook is 1280x800. I want to have 1024x768 for both displays when using Clone or Xinerama mode for presentations.

Clone mode:

Clone mode works with GDM and 1024x768 for both displays. But as soon as I start Gnome, Gnome has a virtual resolution of 1280x800. That means I can move around in the desktop because physical resolution is still correctly 1024x768. Produced xorg.conf for Clone mode seems to be OK but It seems that gnome-display-config sets display size for Gnome to 1280x800.

I think gnome-display-properties should completely removed and replaced with displayconfig-gtk in Gutsy. Otherwise these two will conflict with each other. And it is very confusing for users if they have to setup two display config tools...

Xinerama mode:

X doesn't start up. I'll attach error logs and xorg.conf

Felix, could you test this against version 0.2+20070731ubuntu1 (current in gutsy) and let us know if it still occurs?

I am using the latest version (updated to 2007-08-28) of Gutsy

The version of displayconfig-gtk (0.2+20070731ubur) is better than the previous in that it dosn't cause x to crash. However it still
* Adds extra stuff to my xorg.conf that overides my virtual display setting
* Does not detect what I really have
* A user interface problem: it is not clear which is 'Screen 1' and 'Screen 2'

Thinkpad R60e, + Dell FP2100
attached doc lists the details of what I have and what happens using displayconfig-gtk

Displayconfig-gtk shouldn't enable Xinerama on intel grpahics cards.

It seems to cause crashed for many people.

Xrandr is the preferred configuration now.

I have tested newest version of displayconfig-gtk with intel driver. But it did not work when choosing the clone function or extending my TFT display with a CRT monitor to the right. See attached Xog.0.log.

As far as I know is the "intel" still experimental. That means I will try i810 tomorrow and post results.

For me displayconfig-gtk does not look very promising at the moment - results are _not_ better than last with last version.

I have tested the most recent displayconfig-gtk (0.2+20070905) with IBM R60e today (2007-09-06) [Intel driver]

Problems:
Booting with Dell fp2000 (1600x1200) display connected but not switched on laptop screen is blank. On switching on the Dell external screen the resolution is less than 1600x1200
This, I know is a limitation of the Intel driver, and can be fixed by using command line xrandr to switch on the laptop screen ( xrandr --output LVDS --auto) and set the correct reslution for the internal monitor (xrandr --output VGA --mode 1600x1200 --pos 1024x0)

Attempting to achieve the same using only displayconfig-gtk causes X to fail

I got it working with links from Brian Pitts (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/displayconfig-gtk/+bug/125941/comments/7). I attach my working xorg.conf. Displayconfig should produce sth. like that.

I'm able to activate my external monitor with following command:

xrandr --output VGA --mode 1024x768_70.00 --right-of LVDS

Gnome panel is flipping to the external monitor which shouldn't, but everything else works without problems.

The key parts are:

- Virtual ...
- Modeline for setting good refresh rates on external CRT monitors

displayconfig-gtk should use new intel driver with new xrandr - that should do the trick for intel graphic cards!?
