PlayOnLinux requires curl even though it isn't a dependancy

Bug Description

When I try to open PlayOnLinux from Terminal with the command `playonlinux` or from the Application Finder (Xubuntu) I get the following message:

`PlayOnLinux cannot find curl (from cURL)

You need to install it to continue`

If it needs to have curl to be run, surely it should be a dependancy?

Just install curl. Thats all. Not everything can do everything for you. Install curl, and move on.

Do you want people to switch to using Ubuntu or not? People don't want to have to do extra managerial things, they want the PC to do it for them. That's what Windows does and that's why it's so popular. I'd have to look up the proper process but shall I repackage it with the curl dependency and fix the problem for others? It's still a bug.

I agree with Ads20000. It's a bug. It's an unresolved dependency. I should be able to type apt-get install <anything> from a bare system and all dependencies should be pulled in so I can run the application directly after the installation command.
Josh's comment is unhelpful and IMHO against the entire ethos of Ubuntu.

@Josh Black I totally agree with you. However:
$ apt-cache search curl|wc -l
77
I like automagicthings, so I'm setting this from invalid to confirmed.

@Josh Black

This bug affect playonlinux package from Ubuntu repository only, package provided on the official website have dependency against curl.
So I agree with bascuppen, this bug is confirmed.

@bascuppen, your apt-cache command isn't correct when looking on reverse dependence you should use: apt-cache rdepends <package>

after sudo install curl, playonlinux errors out on

You should install it to use PlayOnLinux"

seems a suggest should be changed in a depend.

Explain how that is Invalid, it's a legitimate bug, it's a dependancy that isn't a dependancy.

As I said before, people don't like having to do things manually, it's why they go back to Windows. If we can make things more automated and easy then people are more likely to stay. Stop pushing people away.

It is not something that we packages, and to be honest, I was under the impression that it was from our site. I apologize for that.

mulx - yes, I see that now. I never install from repos, so this is not something that I had seen. To be honest, I did not know that curl was not a standard lib in Ubuntu and its flavours.

Dude, calm down. You really are making the argument that installing curl from a point-and-click interface is going to immediately push them to ANY OS in general? I am not pushing people away. I made a mistake. So chill out.

As for it going against the "ethos of Ubuntu", this particular incident was from the packager not including the dependencies that are already in the vanilla POL debs from our repo. Why? I have no clue. It seems silly to me that dependencies for things in our builds we be deemed unnecessary in the minds of Ubuntu packagers. I have been getting emails about this issue for months. Actually, almost a year. And the packages have not fixed the dependency issue, even though it is almost a year old now.

The Ubuntu packagers need to fix this bug, as it is apparent what it is needed:
curl
p7zip-full

Ads20000 - In my opinion, the only people pushing anyone away are the people pushing debs with broken/missing dependencies to the Ubuntu main repo. This should be a very simple issue to fix for them, but it is the packagers issue.

So, now that we have all of that settled..... is anyone going to repackage it for Ubuntu's repos? haha. I mean, that is the whole reason for this thread, and this should literally be a 10 minute fix, if that. Let's get it fixed, and for good, and move on.

Come on, this is a huge deal, remember? I couldn't close this un-touched ticket, even though the problem has been found, but completely ignored, until I closed the ticket, and then I get attacked. Let's get with the program. lol. Is this fixed by the Ubuntu packagers, or is it in the process of being fixed? This needs to be fixed, or at least updated by someone from the Ubuntu packagers so that we can have an update as to the progress of the fix, if this is such a major deal.

Thanks

Closing, because there is no progress or updates.

NOTE: If you re-open, please state the reason, fix, and what is being done about it. This should be done by an Ubuntu packager. If I do not see a fix, I will close the ticket. Please either confirm a fix, or propose a fix, but let us not leave tickets open for a year. It is bad form.
