14e4:4727 [Dell Inspiron 10z (1120)] Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS: can't connect to WIFI

Bug Description

After the last updates I can't connect anymore to WIFI networks, including:
 - office wifi (WPA / WPA2 enterprise + PEAP)
 - public wifi from airport lounges, hotels, conferences.

The notebook (dell inspiron) still detects the available newtorks. If they are protected, then additional data are requested (passwords and the like). So it seems that the wifi card is working well with the current driver (see below for further evidence). However, then the connection times out before getting any IP address.

When I switch to Windows, I immediately get the connection (then the wifi network and the notebook's hardware are OK). Sometimes, when I switch back to Ubuntu, the connection starts spontaneously and I can work normally (as if the problem were in the DHCP protocol execution, and the Windows connection "did some work" that Ubuntu currently can't do). (further evidence that the driver is OK).

I'm using the proprietary driver proposed by Ubuntu:
"This package contains Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver for use with Broadcom's BCM4311-, BCM4312-, BCM4313-, BCM4321-, BCM4322-, BCM43224-, and BCM43225-, BCM43227- and BCM43228-based hardware."

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I did some more experiments: If wired network is plugged in, then suddenly the machine is able to complete also wifi connections. It does not matter whether the wired network remains plugged or not before trying the wifi connection. A single wired connection enables also wifi connections until the notebook is rebooted.

good luck with this funny bug. please solve it soon: wifi failure is a very good reason for changing operating system.

Dear Christopher, thank you for your message. Unfortunately, what you suggest is not applicable. The A06 BIOS would break the Windows 7 installation (I have a double installation on this DELL). More precisely, when I tried to install the BIOS under Win 7 I got an error message saying that that BIOS version is incompatible with my 64-bit systems, and the installation was aborted.

Any other suggestion?

Thanks,
Piero

Good question... the processor is AMD Athlon(tm) II Neo K325, so I guess I can exclude the Inspiron 11z Intel (1120) version (?)

If there is a better way of answering your question please feel free to ask.

Piero Bonatti, thank you for the requested information. It would appear (first time I've encountered it) that the BIOS update A06 and A05 for the 10z model would only work in a 32-bit environment. So, let this be skipped for now.

Despite this, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please just make a comment to this?

Dear Christopher, sorry for the delay. I tried to make an extensive set of experiments, using live installations. The new "Trusty" version starts the wireless connection immediately (both 32 and 64 bit systems). However, also the live installation of 12.4.3 (32 bits) works perfectly, which is peculiar (it is the same version installed on my HD)...
More experiments with the current (troublesome) HD installation showed that after disabling and re-enabling wireless once or twice, usually the connection can be completed. Any idea of why this happens?

Piero Bonatti, thank you for testing the Trusty live environment. It would be helpful if you installed Trusty on the same HD you were having a problem with in Precise, and test if the problem is still reproducible.

Mmhm. You can have designs where the middle square is more centered, like this one, or where it is lower. Plus the black and white starkness if pretty unique. I'm just saying that he probably likes the aesthetics of this particular backboard - and that if he were looking for just any backboard he probably wouldn't be asking about this specific one.

Grandson: that's amazing bur tell me your story so I can go

Me: okay, okay don't shoot me with a laser beam. Well you see on reddit people would write about everything and anything. They could ask for advice, or tell a joke or show you a pornogra... never mind that one. The point is it was a community of people each with their own interests and hobbies and lives.

Pass me a Kit Kat and give me a damn break. This is still a huge market with a decent roster in need of a leader. If a coaching prospect doesn't want to come here then they can go take the Raiders job, which the article itself says was ranked below us along with the Jets. This is just Biggs blowing smoke.
