Bug Description

OpenOffice.org defaults to 'Deja Vu' fonts in all applications (Writer, Calc, Base, etc.). When printing documents containing russian letters it misses some letters (e.g. bold russian 'M').

This does not happen if I change the font to one of Nimbus family (e.g. 'Nimbus Sans L').

Can we make Nimbus the default font for OOo? The fonts are most complete replacement for windows's Arial and Times I've found.

Do you still have this problem with Ubuntu hardy or Ubuntu 7.10?

I've the problem with 7.10; I can't test it on Hardy as I don't have a laser printer at home.

Seems that the issue concerns only wide characters, and it may appear/disappear as I change font size. The glyphs are present, but they are not _printed_. Maybe something is wrong with ghostscripting? or with the fonts' metrics?

I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy openoffice.org 1:2.4.0~rc2-1ubuntu3 so I am marking it as Fix Released. If after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then feel free to reopen this bug.

Thanks,

Chris Cheney

I'm having no problems with your document, Yura (Ubuntu 8.10, OOo 1.3.0.0.2ubuntu1 from ppa)
As I understood, the problem should occur near the 'Sewing equipment model' cell? Or is it the 'Year of production' one?

Still I'm strongly concerned OOo should default to Liberation or Nimbus font families, NOT DejaVu. Compatibility with the MS computers is to be considered!

2 Jacob Popov: no, the problem is that "й" isn't printed in title (e.g "Шве ного"). That is the only problem with this document. I should probably prepare better example, because there are some other letters, which are not displayed aslo.

Till,

If I print this to postscript it prints fine, if I select cups-pdf then the letter is missing. Any ideas?

Chris, does it mean that if you print to a regular print queue that there is no problem but if you print in a cups-pdf queue it fails? Looks like it is a problem of cups-pdf.

Chris, can you print into a file (selecting different print queues) and see whether the PostScript files get generated correctly (display on the screen with evince, gv, or gs, unfiltered printing on PostScript printer)? Does "Export to PDF" produce correct PDF files?

Till,

In OpenOffice print menu I selected "Print to File" which seemed to work fine and produced a postscript file with the proper letter displayed, printing to CUPS-PDF however did not work and according to the user printing to their physical printer also did not work. The OOo "Export as PDF" option also worked fine for me.

Till,

I am strongly concerned that this is not a problem with CUPS-PDF, because the problem occurs while printing to some printers also. I do think it's something with DejaVu metrics. Substituting it with any other font solves the trouble. CUPS-PDF is merely one of possible printers to test the issue against. Something happens while printing using DejaVu font, no matter what printer you use.

Chris, this bug is neither fixed nor invalid. Printed documents do miss some cyrillic characters, and this affects only OOo. I'm not even sure this is because of DejaVu fonts.

Please consider returning the Confirmed status.

After playing a while with OOO and printers I am pretty sure this bug is in OOo's printing subsystem. The bug lies definitely somewhere near calculating character widths. It usually appears with bold letters (I've never had it with italics). Changing some settings like font size or printer resolution may solve the problem (or may not!).

Since Feisty the bug has been getting more and more difficult to reproduce, but I confirm, it's still here in Jaunty.

This appears to be an ooo-build issue as I did not see it with official OOo 3.1 and dev300m49 (OOo 3.2) but it did occur on Ubuntu 1:3.1.1-1ubuntu1~jaunty1

I just read as yet another person has bumped on same issue with Karmic (9.10). I'm not sure whether he would be able to report it here, but he has same Й letter problem being missing in direct printing (hp lj) _only_ from OoO

and he also tried to print into PDF and then print PDF to printer - then letter Й is _not_ missing : hence it is about OoO printing subsystem.

Please have a look at bug 376953. There also some glyphs get displayed but not printed from OOo. That bug is fixed in OOo upstream. So the upstream version mentioned there probably fixes also this bug.
