Bug Description

I'm on Kubuntu 7.04.
- I install the package network-manager-pptp
- I select Knetworkmanager (icon) - VPN Connexion - Configure the VPN network
=> nothing :(
- I install the package network-manager-gnome
- I select Knetworkmanager (icon) - VPN Connexion - Configure the VPN network
=> the VPN connection panel will open :)

A dependency is probably missing.

PS : sorry for my poor English, all the themes will not be exact because I'm in French !

Hi,

in this last version the menu are ok, but when i select pptp or ppp, i get the message :
There is no configuration interface for the VPN service pptp installed. Please check your installation.

For openvpn it works.

I have :
ii network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu10 network management framework daemon
ii network-manager-kde 1:0.2ubuntu1-0ubuntu4 KDE systray applet for controlling NetworkManager
ii network-manager-openvpn 0.3.2svn2342-1ubuntu2 network management framework (OpenVPN plugin)
ii network-manager-pptp 0.6.5+svnhead2574-0ubuntu1 network management framework (PPTP plugin)
ii network-manager-vpnc 0.6.4svn2422-0ubuntu3 network management framework (VPNC plugin)

I can confirm this issue on Gutsy, packages installed:

network-manager Version: 0.6.5-0ubuntu11
network-manager-kde Version: 1:0.2ubuntu1-0ubuntu4
network-manager-openvpn Version: 0.3.2svn2342-1ubuntu2
network-manager-pptp Version: 0.6.5+svnhead2574-0ubuntu1
network-manager-vpnc Version: 0.6.4svn2422-0ubuntu3

There is no configuration interface for the VPN service pptp installed, when I choose pptp connection in the options.

This is still an issue. The KNetworkManager dialog allows configuration for service types OpenVPN and VPNC. Option ppp says "no configuration interface found", and no option appears in the list at all for PPTP.

Package info is as follows (Gutsy 64-bit):

network-manager 0.6.5-0ubuntu12
network-manager-gnome 0.6.5-0ubuntu9
network-manager-kde 1:0.2ubuntu1-0ubuntu4

The problem is still present. I think is a big problem because KVpnc does not work Knetworkmanager and of course the KNetworkManager dialog allows configuration for service types OpenVPN and VPNC. Options ppp and PPTP says "no configuration interface found".

network-manager Version: 0.6.5-0ubuntu14
network-manager-gnome Version: 0.6.5-0ubuntu9

network-manager-openvpn Version: 0.3.2svn2342-1ubuntu2

The problem persists. You're about to release a Kubuntu with no way to graphically configure access to a VPN network based on the protocol (sadly) still used in most commercial environments. Any word from above?

Package info see post before this. Using Gutsy 32 bit nightly build from 2007-10-11.

Possible workaround:

1) install network-manager-gnome (if you haven't already)
2) run nm-applet
3) use the Gnome network manager applet to configure your pptp VPN connection
4) close nm-applet and restart knetworkmanager

If you don't have the VPN connection showing up in knetworkmanager by then, go ahead and try a reboot. I'm not exactly sure when the connection showed up, but eventually it did and worked flawlessly so far.

Does it mean the nm-applet does not show "VPN Connections" submenu? Or is there a menu but it is empty? If the latter is your problem: have you already put in the parameters for the vpn connection you want? Which program did you use?

"VPN Connections" didn't show up for me either. The workaround that did work for me was to drop all the GUI tools, and use pon/pptp/pppd instead. This web page was very helpful: http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/howto-diagnosis.phtml .

There is a patched knetworkmanager in Hoary now that should eventually solve the problem:

I tried nem75's workaround. But I have another problem. Knetworkmanager does not appear to do ANYTHING AT ALL. Generic GG installation, click on Knetworkmanager from K menu, nothing happens at all.

This is very bad. From a user standpoint, you should never have any menu options on a system which do nothing at all.

Don't tell them to pull their fingers out... sheesh, that makes them want to write code for you for free, huh?

At any rate, I am having this same issue. No PPTP VPN support even after I install network-manager-pptp. I get the error "No configuration interface". I am in the process of trying nem75's fix, but that is sloppy - this should be something that is integrated into ubuntu (or kubuntu) - I should be able to connect to any VPN out-of-the-box.

Also, the KNetworkManager link does nothing from the menu as everyone is stating. Very frustrating - possibly related to the "administrator mode" not working when in "System Settings"?

I confirm that this problem is still around in Hardy.

I also noticed that Gnome nm-applet called the connection PPTP, while KDE seems to think it's a PPP connection.

Hope this is fixed by the time Hardy releases.

Bård Kalbakk (kalbakk) wrote :

I can confirm that this bug is still present in Hardy.

There is several issues with the current network-manager-kde package:
1) Name-conflict in knetworkmanager_pptp.desktop
2) network-manager-pptp plugin has renamed many pptp options
3) network-manager-pptp plugin has changed dbus authentication

I fixed all these bugs locally the last day, and it was the first time I was looking and knetworkmanager/network-manager source, so they where pretty easy to spot.

I dont know if it is best to fix this in KDE svn(the 3.5 branch) or in the Kubuntu package, but I guess it doesnt matter since obviously no one from Kubuntu is maintaining this package..

What do you think?

I'm attaching a patch I have sent to the knetworkmanager maintainer(Helmut Schaa).
This patch was sent him in april, but I don't think he have had the time to review it yet.

Please note that this is just a small fix for the pptp plugin, it only covers the most basic part of knetworkmanager<->networkmanager-pptp interaction.
It works for me.

Simple instruction verified on Hardy:
1. Install package build-dependencies: apt-get install dbs automake1.9 libtool kdelibs4-dev libnm-util-dev network-manager-dev libhal-dev libdbus-qt-networkstatus-dev
2. Install network-manager-kde source: apt-get source network-manager-kde
3. Delete a completely wrong debian patch: rm knetworkmanager-0.2.2/debian/patches/kubuntu_09_pptp-service-name.patch
4. Patch the sources: cd knetworkmanager-0.2.2; cat knetworkmanager-0.2.2-pptp_naming.patch|patch -p0
5. Build the package: dpkg-buildpackage
6. Install the package: dpkg -i ../network-manager-kde_0.2.2-1ubuntu2_i386.deb

It seems that Bård's patch was committed to the KDE SVN repository, but nevertheless, the version in SVN still doesn't work. On the bright side, they're apparently working on a version 0.7. Unfortunately, I don't see the pptp plugin in the repo.

I followed the instructions on building it from source from here: http://en.opensuse.org/Projects/KNetworkManager#Source
I had to install the following packages:
autoconf1.9
automake **NOTE: you MUST use automake1.9, not just automake which I believe is 1.10**
libhal-dev
libnm-util-dev
libnl-dev
libdbus-qt-1-dev
network-manager-dev
libiw-dev

So, after failing to get it working straight from svn, I followed Bård's instructions, and things worked perfectly. I also had to install the following packages:
cdbs libtool networkstatus-dev

Thank you very much Bård!
