Bug Description

Very annoying bug. When you start 'vncviewer somehost' it asks a password in a popup. Under compiz u can't enter password from the first time.
To enter a password u need:
1. click on the password edit box
2. Alt-tab to different application
3. Alt-tab to vncviewer
4. Enter password

Need to be done something with this.

The same happens with the default installed Gnome tsclient. The interesting thing is that this doesn't happen with Feisty, compiz and the old tsclient password dialog.
Could someone put this to higher priority? This is the last compiz issue I am experiencing with Gutsy and tsclient is important for support.

If you click on the exact right place (seems somewhat random) it works in gutsy.

I have the same problem.

Clicking the right and left mouse button at the same time, in the password input field, allows you to enter the password.

Alternatively you can download tightvnc-java which works with compiz. Just make sure you use the host::port syntax.

This should be fixed with the following commit:

commit 1c9237b8f824ba9902b9ffb50d279553f9d73220
Author: Danny Baumann <email address hidden>
Date: Mon Oct 15 10:44:56 2007 +0200

We have to send the WM_TAKE_FOCUS message even if we directly set the input

I filed recently a duplicate bug (didn't find this thread) at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/156827.

Here's one quick work-around for entering data in a data entry field when using vncviewer (the alt-tab didn't work for me if the other application covered vncviewer):

1.) Click on an open application that is adjacent to but not covering vncviewer (such as a Tomboy note, which is how I found out the workaround)
2.) Click back on the data entry field of vncviewer; you can then enter data.

I have the same bug with vnc, but also discovered the same behavior when trying to enter text in the address book searcher applet added to the panel. I have to disable compiz-fusion to enter an address book search from my panel.

I believe this problem is caused by compiz's focusing rules. Go to ccsm -> General Options -> Focus and Raise Behavior
A quick fix for this problem would be to just put an exclamation point before any in the Focus Prevention Windows field. Like so:

Focus Prevention Windows: !any

Tell me if this works.

Thank you for your suggestion Adam, Unfortunately, "Focus Prevention Windows: !any" had no effect on the problem, at least as far as the address book searcher goes.

Don't spend too much time looking for a solution. New upstream releases fix this problem. I backported Hardy packages for Gutsy with success.

The point now would be to upload this specific fix into gutsy-proposed.
