Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced. If this is a regression, we can perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that introduced the problem.

This didn't used to happen. I believe it started with the 3.11 kernel
since there is new code in that area. I will try installing 3.10 and
some early 3.11 RCs and see where I land. I know where to get the
earlier kernel packages (kernel team PPA) but how do I interrupt the
boot process to tell ubuntu to run an older release. Everything is
masked by the "Ubuntu" logo boot now.

You can select which kernel to boot from the GRUB menu. To access the GRUB menu, hold the shift key after poweron and the BIOS loads.

Given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

We are approaching release and would like to confirm if this bug is still present. Please test again with the latest development kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

I just confirmed that the problem continue to exist using Linux X1
3.11.0-8-generic #15-Ubuntu kernel. The 13.10 system is updated as of
2013.09.21.

I did upgrade the BIOS a few weeks ago when I was running 13.10.
Unfortunately, this didn't change anything. I am now running 14.04
with the latest apt-get and the results are the same.

> What happened?

Upon cold boot or restart, the screen brightness is set to maximum
even if my setting wasn't.

> Output of the command "sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date"

G6ET99WW (2.59 )
11/19/2013

One thing I noticed is that when the machine boots and the "lenovo"
logo is displayed, the screen brightness is set to maximum, which
leads to believe that UEFI runtime services may not be setting the
brightness variable properly so it isn't persistent.

I am now booting 14.04 dev images and the problem persists.
