Bug Description

This likely is connected to my previous bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/linuxmint/+bug/1200786

Launched Nemo at 3:47 pm today. At launch it used 25.7 MiB of RAM, according to System Monitor.

I navigated to one subdirectory, and then left it untouched while doing other work.

As of 5:23 pm today it is now is using 349.7 MiB of RAM. And climbing as I watch.

Wow, it's now 5:29 pm, and it's up to 373.7 MiB.

6:04 pm - 515 MiB

Release: Linux Mint 15 "olivia"
Edition: Cinnamon 64-bit
3 gigs RAM

There is a new version of Nemo - 1.8.4 - available in Romeo for Mint 15, that is intended to address a certain memory leak issue. Give it a try if you would (log out/back in after installing it to ensure the new version is running)

1.8.4 doesn't fix the problem unfortunately. Just added a new patch today but a new release hasn't been made yet.

This affects me too, 64 bit Mint 15, cinnamon - Nemo reached 6.3GB usage and seems to be constantly polling the hard drive - is there some temporary fix to stop it?

You can install the latest Nemo off the nightly PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -traring install nemo

@Michael Webster The problem indeed appears resolved. It's been running now quite happily with approx 35mb of usage, it's no longer using approx 5% of CPU power all the time or polling the harddrive.

I am experiencing this same bug.

As of right now, My current usage of Nemo is 779.8 MB but it is not open and hasn't been for about an hour.

This is a rather big problem because it is using more memory than next 10 process COMBINED and this includes Firefox, Spotify, Cinnamon, Dropbox, and Pidgin just to name a few.

I just read the previous comments so I am currently installing the nightly build so lets see if this fixes it. :)

@Michael Webster The problem indeed appears resolved. Thanks for the help. The memory leak appears to be fixed.

However, when I close Nemo (File | Close) or CTRL-W, the Nemo process continues to run in System Monitor.

However, without the runaway RAM that's not a big deal.

thank you for such great support. I might have got lucky posting issue here and having it solved no less than 15 minutes later but I'd like to think that is how the Mint community just is.

My question is will this fix be pushed to stable, how do we found out when.. I would prefer use stable than nightly basically, if that's ok so PPA maybe I can remove this at some point.

It will be pushed to stable - we just wanted to get a fair amount of feedback before doing so. Hopefully in the next week.

When the new version of Nemo come to stable upgrades?

Today my nemo is around 2.1GB of RAM...only things to do is to kill and restart the process.

This memory leak appears to be back again in the PPA I started using earlier in the thread - again Nemo is sitting there using 4 - 6% of a CPU and slowly sucking up RAM. Pretty annoying.

Am re-installing the nightlies to see what happens.

Ugh, this is intolerable, the reason I "had" to use the nightly in the first place was to get rid of this issue and now it's there even, what am I supposed to do? I can't have Nemo pissing away my memory and CPU I have work to do! And yes I need all my RAM and CPU because I work in 3D.

I have the memory leak, too. I've seen it get as high as 20GB usage (using swap, too)! It seems to happen at random. One thing that is consistent is that the Nemo process always continues to run after I close Nemo (even if it's not hogging the RAM). I must end it manually.

Steve - install the nightly version - that should fix the problem.

You can install the latest Nemo off the nightly PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gwendal-lebihan-dev/cinnamon-nightly
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -traring install nemo

Nemo underpins a lot of stuff, so will still be running even when there's no Nemo window open.

I don't know. I've not installed 2.0 yet. I've not seen this bug since
I upgraded per the instructions below. You'll see warnings when you try
this fix, but I've had no problem with it for about a month now:

Hello all,
I did this update and now I have the latest nemo in my system and the issue with the memory leak is solved. However, this created a new issue for me, I can not change my desktop background, it just stays black. This is the second time this happens, I think I reinstalled my entire OS and this was one of the reasons and now it is happening again!

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

Thanks all

Well, "fix commited" doesn't seem to reflect the reality: if I understand the comments above the fix is only temporary. Can we expect this to be solved?

I think it should be reopened again.

The problem is still there, for almost all versions of nemo currently out there.

The reason why it seemed resolved many times but one could not point out a certain change that resolved it is simple: The cause seems to be out-of-control thumbnailing. If, at some point, the problematic files are thumbnailed or have failed to being so gracefully, cpu and memory usage may drop (or not occur again after restart or reopening of the suspect folder). So the problem may easily seem to fix itself.

This mostly happens when many folders containing images are browsed (thumbnailing a certain won't stop until its done) but also for bad image files, where the thumbnailer is repeatadly invoked on the same file. I think the thumbnailing threads and their data stacks up then and whe experience unlimited cpu and memory usage.

Another chime in;
This bug is still around. Nemo just keeps creeping up the memory and not releasing it. Currently I do not have any Nemo actions or instances open, yet it is occupying 1,75 GiB of RAM (11,4 % of total) at 3 days of uptime. My Nemo version is 3.6.5.

When I start up my computer, Nemo only takes few tens of megs of RAM, but it steadily increases until it crashes, after which the RAM usage drops to startup levels and the cycle continues. This crash usually happens at a 4 to 5 day uptime mark, and always in the middle of using Nemo. It is normal for Nemo to creep up to at least over a gig of used RAM over couple of days, and fixing this should be a high priority. This has been going on for too long.
