if it's now intended to have both that's cool but then the 'Restart' option should open with focus on "Restart', not "Shut Down"

Hi Doug,

Could you attach a screenshot of what you're seeing in the session menu?

There are a couple of scenarios where both menuitems will appear -- for one example, if you have the confirmation prompt disabled so that there's no unity popup dialog.

First you choose restart/shutdown in the standard menu. This choice must be made to choose something but both options bring you to the same dialog.

Then you have to choose again with the big two button dialog. This is not a good user experience.

This is a daily build ISO of saucy synched last night. I have indicator-session 12.10.5+13.10.20130823-0ubuntu1.

This was fixed 2-3 days ago with 13.10 updates. However, I don't think I have to authority to close this ticket.

"Restart" was removed from system-menu. Clicking "shutdown" reveals the choice to either restart or shut down. That makes sense.

No, cannot confirm this is fixed at all. Checked from a fresh amd64
13.10 install from 10/04 image, fully updated, plus looked thru -proposed.

I /think/ Restart disappeared and then came back again with a later update, or possibly just a reboot, but not certain.

This bug affects me after I tried to active the 'hibernate' option in the menu by following these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/12.04/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html.

Instead of getting the 'hibernate' option, I instead got the 'restart' option described by this bug report. It was not there before.

I take my words back. The strange redundant restart option is back with a recent update. So back to not fixed.

Oh??? What's going on here. Without restarting or logging out suddenly restart has disappeared again. This is puzzling.

I have 13.10 x64 running on an Atom netbook and a Core i7 monster. On both after a reboot the 'restart' item is in the menu. After a few minutes it disappears from the i7 menu but remains in the Atom. Is it really so hard to delete an item in a config list?

Those of you that wish to remove that unnecessary Restart option can use a workaround. First install dconf-editor and then launch it from commands lens Alt+F2 and navigate to:

>apps>indicator-session

and then simply check "suppress-restart-menuitem" and the annoying and redundant Restart option will disappear.

Anyway I think that if this option was added intentionally it should behave like the bug reporter mentioned.

While investigating bug 1232814, I found that if I killed indicator-session-service (and let it respawn automatically) after login, the Restart option will be (correctly) hidden.

This "bug" is still present in Trusty. IMHO, it would be nice to get rid of it before release of the LTS.

I concur with zob. Bug is still present in January 23rd build, and is very unprofessional. With new users coming in this year due to the publicity boost Linux has received in the gaming sector, it is advisable to remove this sort of amateurish mistake, to create the best impression.

I fully agree with zob and returningshadow. Though this bug looks fairly "small", it is obvious, annoying and produces bad impression.

Same happens on Trusty. This bug seems too easy to correct: just delete restart. Please close the bug before Trusty launch.

As I explained in a mirror image of this bug report (which I can't find right now) last week, just removing the menu item would not fix the problem. The restart command is also offered from Software Updater when updates require restart, and from Software & Updates settings when you change. And if anyone implemented the Startup Settings for Grub configuration, restart would be offered from there too. All of them used to open a sensible Restart dialog. They now produce a Shut Down dialog. That's Unity's fault, not the fault of any of the components that are asking for a restart.

@Matthew,
this is the restart dialog I got from Software-Updater, it this the dialog that you're talking about?

Doug McMahon (mc3man) wrote :

The restart option is not really gone in 14.04 though the current behavior is just as good.
On boot up or login there are still both restart & shutdown options
As soon as something is done, (open a folder, switch workspaces, ect) the restart option disappears from the indicator

So in practice this is resolved.

How is this resolved if options in menus magically disappear when something unrelated is clicked upon?

@Doug: what you describe is weird. I don't see the issue here (tried on several installs/accounts), but it could be sign that it depends on what order things are loaded on login/be a timing between components issue

Adam - didn't say fixed but if what I see is common then not an issue of real concern
Am going to amend previous comment to - you don't have to do anything - "restart" disappears after about 6 secs or so.
Attached is small vid from an autostarted recorder

I confirm the behaviour described by Doug: "you don't have to do anything - "restart" disappears after about 6 secs or so"
Indeed, the "restart" option disappears spontaneously after a while. I observe this on my Ubuntu 14.04 amd64 with all updates installed.

Considering the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/1154578 it’s meaningful to have Restart button on the right side of the restart dialog.
