Bug Description

I noticed that since Natty or Oneiric (I don't remember precisely) I have a strange behaviour: after resuming the PC from suspend, the fan starts rotating too fast, even if the PC is not hot. When I first had the problem, I could solve it by (dis)connecting the power cable. In latest versions of Ubuntu, maybe since Precise, this workaround doesn't work anymore.
I have the mainline kernel downloaded from here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.11-rc1-saucy/

I attached some logs, I don't know what else I can provide to help troubleshooting this bug.

I'm using Ubuntu 13.10 amd64.

This is not a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1197311
That is another DIFFERENT bug I reported. I also included information about this problem but they told me to file a new bug.

It's different: the fan is not just always on (it is always on in any case because I set an option in the EFI settings); it just starts rotating very very fast; I've never seen it rotating so fast, even if the PC was very hot; it happened that the PC turned off because it was too hot and the kernel wasn't able to make the fan rotate at the right speed.

But after a suspend the sound is like a vacuum machine! :)

I also removed the tag "needs-upstream-testing" because I'm already running the mainline kernel, if you read the description...
I will attach a log after suspend soon.

I should have been more specific. There is discussion specific to the 4510s towards then end of the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/77370/comments/96

OK, I will read it.

OK, that's what I'm talking about. I will try the scripts provided in that
bug and check lm-sensors. At the moment I cannot test it as the fan is not
fisically working (it started making strange sounds yesterday and I had to
turn the PC off), and anyway I'm writing from the phone...

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.11 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I think this bug has been fixed. I tried to repeat the steps (shut down the PC, open and close quickly the lid) and the PC shut down normally without suspending. I repeated it three or four times before coming back here, and it didn't happen again.

Davide Depau, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

I currently have the development version. I will do that tomorrow or the
next week as at the moment there is a thunderstorm and my internet
connection is very unstable, and I must use my (limited) mobile broadband.
Sorry.
