I have recently, re-installed fresh ubuntu 13.10 distribution release. But everything worked fine. until recently i had strange problem of my display screen getting freezed randomly; but no response to either mouse/keyboard.
But i want to point it out; it happens randomly and is not specific ?
Other day, i had music player playing in background, but screen freezed. but my music was still running.
Kindly note, i used multiple monitor setup and same issue of screen freeze also cropped up.

issue decreases greatly when compiz effects are disabled using compiz config setting manager.

Only way to recover is to control+alt+F3 and give shutdown -r command.

I may be having this same problem but currently unsure as it seems to be tied to Skype use for me, although this might just be a coincidence - my computer is rarely heavily loaded. It was the fact that the other terminals still work that's made me this this is the same issue that I'm having.

* GUI becomes non-responsive (no hovering changes, clicking, scrolling etc).
* Video freezes (in Skype)
* Sound and microphone continues to work normally (in Skype)
* Mouse still moves (clicks don't work)
* Keyboard doesn't work, except to switch terminals
* Text terminals appear to work normally
* Computer doesn't appear to be busy after the freeze (I didn't check CPU, but terminal is responsive and there's no disk thrashing)
* Restarting lightdm has worked once, but display didn't wake-up after its next sleep - direct power-off required.
* Reboot required to get PC working normally again.
* Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit (3.8.0-23-generic)

Does this stack up with the other experiences?

In my case, every once in a while the screen freezes and the keyboard and mouse stop responding. This lasts for about 0.5-5 sec, and then activity resumes as normal. Makes usage of the computer very incovenient. Cannot confirm 100%, but it looks like it is linked to heavy processor usage.

Using Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 (with gnome ppa enabled) with

OpenGL vendor string: X.Org
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD RV610
OpenGL version string: 3.0 Mesa 9.1.3
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.30

Any workaround suggested?

The problem with screen freezing seems to be solved when I set /proc/sys/vm/swappiness to 0 (probably 10 also will be fine).
And I should note than in my case of screen freezing mouse cursor also stops moving completely. Such freeing lasts from 1 second to ~10 seconds.

If it freezes, I can ctrl+tab+f1-6, and then ctrl+tab+f7, and then everything is good again. Anybody else got this?

This has been the case for me since 12.04 LTS, when ever the a sound is playing and the volume is up on 100% past the unamplified setting it freezes most of the OS, but the instant that the volume is turned down there is a delay, Linux catches up and unfreezes everything. I have a feeling that Pulseaudio is knotting things up. I'm unsure where the issue lies but this does seem to be the case. I do hope that this does not happen with the Ubuntu Touch OS for mobiles cos I know a heap of people that crank the volume right up to the max. Linux 3.0 has always been an issue for my realtek audio, 5.1 no longer works as standard when compared to Linux 2.6 which was fluid.

Hi all. I too had these issues right after upgrading my system to 13.10. My experience mirrors that of Phill, with a few differences:

* Sound output is sometimes interrupted in my audio player
* Mouse still moves (clicks don't work) BUT it sometimes freezes as well
* The problem occurs in a virtual console as well. Emacs freezes (I can't enter text)
* No reboot required. But sometimes it takes a long time for the computer to unfreeze.
* Ubuntu 13.10 64-bit (3.11.0-7-generic)

Furthermore, contrary to saha's experience, there isn't any correlation between a freeze and cpu load for me. Also saha is running a 3.8.0-25-generic kernel and the freezes don't occurs with 3.8.0 for me (see end of my comment).

I have a laptop with nvidia optimus (intel graphics + discrete nvidia card, however the intel card always drives the display even though the nvidia card might be the source). The problem occurs while using any of the 2 graphics adapters. However a bug in the intel driver could still be to blame, but very unlikely in my opinion. So I don't think this is a graphics issue.

Now, I also have a 3.8.0-30-generic kernel, which I have been using for an hour now. No freezes yet. So I think this is a kernel bug. I think it unlikely to be a problem related to a combination kernel + gfx card because as I mentioned the problem occurs without X too. I will update my comment if a freeze occurs.

I will try different kernels and see what happens and report back.

Update: I downgraded back to 13.04 and the problem vanished, thus confirming that one of the upgraded packages is causing it. However, I am still running the 3.11.0-7-generic kernel, so it's something else.

One way to uncover the culprit would be to update to 13.10 incrementally just a few packages at a time and see which one brings back the freezes. I don't have much time these next few days but if somebody could try it, it would save all of us a lot of pain (really can't work like this). I will have a go at it next week. I don't see any other solution unless someone finally finds an error message in a log somewhere.

I started experiencing this hang after I upgraded from Kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10 yesterday (both 64 bit).

The freeze usually happens when I try to context switch between windows running Firefox or between Firefox/Thunderbird windows. It also happens when I close windows. The problem is not consistent (i.e., happening on every switch/close) but happens fairly frequently. Ctl-Alt-F1/Ctl-Alt-F7 does not always help.

Recovery takes several seconds.

A reboot does not fix the problem, i.e., hangs happen after reboots.

Sometimes the hang happens even while browsing within a Firefox window.

I saw the following in dmesg around the time of the problems. I tried Ctl-Alt-F1/Ctl-Alt-F7 and the graphics screen hung (black screen with moveable mouse cursor). I do recall seeing the login screen for a moment and the black screen right after I logged in again. I then rebooted the system.

I have the same problem as described by many in this thread. Ubuntu-studio v13.10, kernel 3.11.0-13-generic

MSI GE40, NVIDIA GeForce 760M, nvidia-319 & nvidia-331 both cause problems with nvidia-prime (muxless system)

GUI will completely lockup randomly & infrequently... mouse/keyboard doesn't visually update, but I think things continue to happen (just doesn't update on the screen). Switching to a text terminal (ctrl+alt+f2) FIXES the problem and things resume normally (until the next lockup).

Hoping for a fix!

I'm going to point the finger at something in xorg, as the 14.04 beta has been behaving perfectly.

The same problem with 14.04 on Lenovo T540p using NVIDIA. It seems if I am using UltraDock with mouse and keyboard no issues however with trackpad the coursor may freeze eventually and the only way to fix the problem would be C-A-F1 and then back C-A-F7.

This bug was affecting me under these specific circumstances:

Ubuntu 13.10 - all updates applied
Hardware: HP Elitebook 8440p (Video is NVIDIA NVS 3100M graphics)
Problem seemed more prevalent when laptop was under load and was getting hot, almost like a CPU thermal shutdown issue..

This problem has stabalised for me since upgrading to 14.04, and have not had an issue since..

Regardless of new report policy for this site... I'm not sure if the mods here are aware, but this page is top hit in Google search for this problem, this is why everyone is posting here...

It is certainly more stable though under 14.04 but not 100%

Exactly the same issue on Asus N550JV laptop (hybrid graphics: Intel HD 4600/nVIDIA GT 750M), fresh install of 14.04, nvidia-331. Random lockups when using nVIDIA card, no lockups at all when using Intel. Lockups happen more often when nVIDIA card is under load (for example, playing Civilization V).
