Bug Description

Since this kernel version, my system won't go into standby correctly anymore!

I noticed it several times that the laptop battery on my Dell XPS 17 (L702x) with Core i7 processor was empty when I wanted to resume after standby, but now I investigated further and noticed that the case is EXTREMELY hot when it is in standby.

Don't know what you need to investigate this, but this has not been the case for years now.
Maybe it is even harmful to the system, as fans are off and all, but the processor works on and on!

Please help!!

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I would love to "add the tag" kernel-fixed-upstream!
BUT HOW??? How come Launchpad is so obfuscated that I cannot find such a apparently simple thing...???

Please, add the tag kernel-fixed-upstream - in the 3.9 mainline kernel my processor stays cool over night!

Thanks!

linux-image-3.5.0-27 still has the same problem. Could this be fixed please? This is a serious limitation to use Ubuntu!! :-(

Sorry, I did not know I had to set this to confirmed!!
What can we do about this? This limits the usefulness of Ubuntu A LOT!

I always have to shutdown my PC since I got this bug!

HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP!

This is a confirmed bug - it happens with the latest Raring, straight from the USB drive.
You can boot the system, send it to suspend and the processor gets BURNING hot! It sucks the battery empty, the fans don't work but the i7 CPU heats and heats and heats!

How on earth can this bug not get HIGHEST possible attention??

I tried Kernel 3.9 - the bug is STILL in there, too!

Can ANYBODY explain to me what else I could do but try to get attention in Launchpad?

I tried 3.9 mainline kernel rc8, but there standby does not work at all.
Thus, I change these bug's tags!

Zordid, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

Christopher, this bug is STILL there! Nothing changed. I booted the daily live current from USB, went into suspend and there it is again, the CPU heats and heats without any fan helping to cool.

This bug is damn serious. I cannot understand why nothing happens.

Ubuntu used to work on this machine fine / unfortunately I do not know which kernel version brought the problem - but Ubuntu is unusable and DANGEROUS this way!

If I can do anything to help, please let me know!

Zordid, thank you for testing Saucy. Regarding your comments https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1153217/comments/32 :

At this risk of patronizing, because nobody assigned it to themselves.

>"...why is it of medium importance?"

You may learn more about Importance via https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance .

Despite this, what the most recent release the issue was not reproducible in?

The most recent release that worked was 12.04.

Thanks for your explanations. I am still very confused why such a thing with a common Core i7 processor can happen. Am I the only one that has a Dell XPS Laptop running Ubuntu? Is that possible?

What makes this bug incomplete? Do you need more input? What could I do to gather logs on what's going on during sleep that is no sleep anymore?

I just read your Importance link and I would definitely say this is of HIGH importance:

High: A bug which fulfills one of the following criteria:
Has a severe impact on a small portion of Ubuntu users (estimated)

The impact of this is extremly severe - when I found my laptop the first time in suspend with this bug, it was overheated - I guess one could easily damage the hardware or even burn your house with that.

Remember: the CPU does not go to sleep, but all fans are off...

Zordid, thank you for providing the requested information. The next step is to perform a Ubuntu kernel bisect, to identify the commit that caused this problem. Could you please do this following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection ?

Zordid (zordid-gmx) wrote :

How am I going to do this?
It still means I have to probe a lot of Kernels - and I do not know how to find out whether there's trouble unless I send my laptop to sleep and wait at least minutes up to an hour to see whether the CPU cools down or heats up! :-(
This is so mad....

Hello???? EXPIRED???

This is a VERY VERY VERY SERIOUS BUG that needs attention! You are practically DESTROYING hardware with that!

I am sorry that I cannot help you in bisecting a kernel - this is way beyond what I as a user can do!

So PLEASE - get serious and help me.

Ubuntu 13.10 - still same problem. Put my Dell XPS 17 into sleep and it will drain the battery completely while fans are off and CPU gets hot as hell.
