Bug Description

After upgrading to Feisty, with an Edgy system that already had OOo 2.2 (from de.openoffice.org, deb packages), they were removed. Fine, I just reinstalled them using Gnome-App-Installer (GAI) after the upgrade.

However, GAI neither offered OOo Math (the equation editor) nor did it install it when I installed all the OOo packages (Writer, Calc, Presenter and Base). It is invisible and unselectable in GAI and this makes it impossible to create or view math equations in Writer by default.

Please either show the OOo Math package in GAI, in the "Office" section, or make OOo Writer depend on it, since equations are (IMHO) quite an important part of a word processor.

Thanks!

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I am having a hard time determining whether or not openoffice.org-math is part of the default install. It seems to me that openoffice.org-math is one of the packages that openoffice.org depends on. Could you check and see if it is installed via 'dpkg -l openoffice.org-math'? Thanks in advance.

According to packages.ubuntu.com, openoffice.org depends on -math and other packages. I just needed Writer, Calc and Presenter, and not the other packages, and incidentally I didn't know there was a metapackage.

This could actually be considered a bug in gnome-app-installer (GAI), because GAI offers four seperate OOo packages (Writer, Calc, Draw, Presenter) but not the metapackage. So if you install OOo via GAI you do not get the chance to install OOO Math. You do get it (IIRC) on a default install, but if for some reason you have to reinstall, there is no way to get it without resorting to the shell.

IMHO this now boils down to whether the Equation Editor should be considered a vital part of OpenOffice.org, even if you install only parts of OOo. Pro arguments:
+ It's small (just one Mb, which translates to less than 1/10 cent at current harddisk prices)
+ It's selected by default in Microsoft Office, even if you install only parts (eg. Word), so MS Office users might expect it

Resolution suggestion:
- have the big four (Writer, Calc, Presenter, Draw) depend on OOo-Math, or
- show OOo-math in GAI

Thanks! :)

Jens

Add/Remove... shows the openoffice.org metapackage these days, which partly addresses this (but only partly).

It looks like adding "Categories=Application;Office;Math" to ooo-math.desktop (compare Categories in the other .desktop files) would fix this, and I think it would be fairly reasonable. Targetting to hardy.

If you want to test the .desktop file change, you need to:

 * edit /usr/share/app-install/desktop/ooo-math.desktop, not any other copy (app-install-data has its own copies of .desktop files, generated automatically);
 * run 'sudo update-app-install' before starting g-a-i
