It looks like the ntfs-3g package is improperly versioned. It was at major rev 835 in quantal, and is now at major rev 84. I think this is upstream incorrect versioning and we're going to have to add a debian epoch with proper ABI versioning.

summary: - testdisk: error while loading shared libraries: libntfs-3g.so.835:
- cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I have followed up to the Debian bug with a more correct version of events. In the meantime we should rebuild testdisk against the new library ABI anyway, to get things working again ASAP.

This bug was fixed in the package ntfs-3g - 1:2013.1.13-1+0ubuntu1

---------------
ntfs-3g (1:2013.1.13-1+0ubuntu1) raring; urgency=low

  * Use a virtual package to generate tighter reverse-dependencies, as the
    soname is ever-changing. (LP: #1126547)
  * Use parallel build.
  * Acknowledge stealing debian's -1 upload version number.
  * Fix libntfs-3g.so symlink.

Partclone was also affected by this. It should just need a no-change upload to rebuild against the fixed ntfs-3g.

partclone.ntfs is still affected by this bug. Looks like a partclone.ntfs packaging issue, but I don't see a new bug created following Phillip's comment above.

Hello Rainer, or anyone else affected,

Accepted partclone into raring-proposed. The package will build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partclone/0.2.51-1ubuntu1.1 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance!

16.06 xenial show same error with mkntfs:

mkntfs: error while loading shared libraries: libntfs-3g.so.85: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Shared object installed in /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ by the ntfs-3g (2015) package are:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2017-01-28 17:54 /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libntfs-3g.so.861 -> libntfs-3g.so.861.0.0

Adding a link from libntfs-3g.so.85 to libntfs-3g.so.861.0.0

generate an incompatible SO version. So the Ubuntu package is built with wrong settings

I haven't found ppa with ntfs-3g (2017.3.23) for xenial.
Building ntfs-3g (2017.3.23) from sources, build well. I keep binaries in my PATH

@efa: if you have a problem with ntfs-3g in xenial you should better open a new bug instead of commenting on a 5 year old issue that has been closed 5 releases before xenial existed.
