Bug Description

I did the official upgrade (via update manager) from kubuntu 6.06 to 6.10, and then to 7.04... (all AMD64)

the problem is in 7.04 that persists since 6.06.

my notebook is a gateway mx6447

I have sound only for output, not input. sound card is recognized by alsamixer as HDA ATI SB with a SigmaTel ID7634 chip. opening alsamixer, "capture" has two mixers that appears to be activated (neither is mute). Under dapper or Edgy, "capture" was simply empty and the output had only two mixers instead of five actually. I have already compiled alsa-drivers' last version (rc3), and that persists. It is something I really need to fix up, as I need to use Skype.
here some info that maybe of help on this problem:

I have the same issue, even in Gutsy, with my STAC9250 in my Gateway M685 (also known as NX860 or PA6). If I try to arecord, all I get is this, followed by an application hang, then a read error due to timeout:

dana@m685:~$ arecord -fcd
Recording WAVE 'stdin' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
RIFF$WAVEfmt Ddata

I have pastebin'd the results of alsa-info.sh 0.4.19 ( linux-sound.info server is down, so I can't check for updates).
http://pastebin.ca/626876
I have noticed in a BIOS update changelog, "Change audio verb table for Vista DTM test" -- would Gateway's driver INI files (one for Vista, one for XP) be useful?

Note: one interesting fact is that the onboard microphone jack is stereo, and there is no separate line-in jack.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

This issue is still present in Gutsy, and even into Hardy at this point (kernel 2.6.24-1-generic).

One note: I have noticed this error in dmesg, though I'm not sure exactly when it occurs. I assume it's when I try capturing (which turns out to be when PulseAudio starts).

[ 3378.669683] hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last cmd=0x011f1c00

With this post, I shall attach the output of the now-back-online alsa-info.sh

I shall attach the INI files for the configs for XP and Vista, in case they help:

I'm not sure if it helps, but IDT has released specs sheets at http://www.idt.com/?genID=STAC9250

Another note: Since apparently each port can be either input or output, would it be possible to allow the "mic as output" or "line-in as output" options for this audio chip? In addition, I noticed that ALSA reports some IEC958-related pins, even though my notebook lacks a physical output. However, there are no mixer controls for this nonexistant output.

Another note: once the audio driver loads, PC speaker entirely breaks. I suppose that may be considered a good thing, though.

cat /dev/dsp
(hangs for a while, and then:)cat: /dev/dsp: Input/output error

Another feature that's deliberately hidden in the XP drivers, and entirely removed in the Vista drivers, is Stereo Mix recording. Is there any chance of enabling this in the ALSA drivers? I'd imagine the function may be entirely software, though.

Hmm, I was getting the hang, but not the error, with -d; then I realized that it should be -Dhw:0 (capital letter).

The error given by arecord after the hang is this: arecord: pcm_read:1347: read error: Input/output error

I have added single_cmd=1 to the options for snd-hda-intel, in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, so the above snippet from dmesg is with single_cmd=1 applied.

Here's something kind of interesting: the new 2.6.26-2-generic kernel in Intrepid somehow magically fixed my audio capture.
I had previously (a few months ago) tried the HG version of ALSA, with no effect... but this time, somehow, the new kernel must've changed something else (perhaps interrupt handling? Beats me). When I get a chance, I'll try the HG ALSA again on the Hardy 2.6.24-19-generic kernel, and perhaps this time it will fix capture on that kernel.

Note: until the entirely separate issue of nvidia and fglrx with Xen kernels is figured out, I can't recommend installing the Intrepid kernel in Hardy -- it's not an "easy" fix.

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue indeed is resolved for Intrepid. If not, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Fernando,

You need to enable the Intrepid archive/repository to get the 2.6.27 kernel. If you are unfamiliar with how to do this I'd suggest maybe waiting for Alpha5 to be released to test. Thanks again for your interest to help test, we really appreciate it!

I'm currently using Intrepid, and the behavior of the audio chip has changed! Now I have functioning audio capture... but I also have strange volume mixer behavior. I now have two mixer controls ("Master" and "Headphone") that seem to multiply each other, and I also have a "Front" control that does nothing. In addition, my audio goes silent if either "Master" or "Headphone" is below 50 volume.

I believe you should open a new bug for this since you could have a slightly different HW configuration internally.
