Bug Description

After logging onto Ubuntu 12.10, only the default background is shown and nothing else. This occurs on an HP TC1100 tablet using GeForce4 420 Go 32M

Using Ubuntu 12.04 worked fine before and after logon.

In 12.10, I tested kernel 3.2.0-23 but the same problem occurs.

WORKAROUND: Use the following kernel parameter, but the OS responds slower:
nomodeset

Graham, thank you for reporting this bug and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel ( v3.7-rc5-raring ) available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

I'm sorry for not making a comment regarding my adding the needs-bisect tag, as I just recently moved from the NE USA to SW, and it has been quite hectic. Despite this, the needs-bisect tag is a tracker tag noting the commit causing the regression has not been identified yet. For more on this please see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Tags#Regression_specific .

Due to how you tested kernel 3.2.0-23 in Quantal, but you said that this was not a problem in Precise environment, this bug seems correlated to something userspace related. One way to provide evidence towards this would be to test the Oneiric kernel in Quantal. Could you please do this via https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/3.0.0-12.20/+build/2829181 ?

Not a problem. Hope your settled into your new home now :).

Regarding files to download and install. Usually, I would download the kernel-image-extra package but this is not available (only virtual). Can I just download the standard kernel-image (non pae) kernel? Do I need to download the headers?

Graham, thank you for testing the requested kernel. Could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

I was only able to install 13.04 using "nomodeset" and after reboot, screen went weird (white burn in with multi coloured vertical lines) even before getting to the logon prompt. This same screen occured during installation and testing in live mode. Same screen occured when switching to other screens (i.e ctrl+F1, F2, etc) after using "nomodeset".

'nomodeset' is unsupported, and should not be needed. nouveau.noaccel=1 would be better pre 3.7, or nouveau.config=PGRAPH=0 after the nouveau kernel rewrite..

Hi Maarten

I'm currently using the 3.7.0-7 kernel and tried your suggestion (nouveau.config=PGRAPH=0) but I'm still seeing the corrupted screen (as shown in #4). I also tried your other suggestion with the same results.

I entered these settings in the same place that I entered "nomodeset" (during boot up). I hope that was correct. If not, let me know and I'll test again.

Also, Parted Magic 2013.01.29 is now showing this corrupted screen whereas previous versions have been fine. Going by the changelog, this may be due to the updated Xorg packages (see link below).

Offhand this sounds like a "compiz crashed" bug, particularly if you're finding the issue does not appear with lubuntu or other non-unity ubuntu's. If this is true, then you should be able to launch a terminal window via "<ctrl><alt> t" when the system is showing just the background.

In any case, since this bug was filed originally against linux, it does not have the X debugging info. Please reproduce the problem and then run 'apport-collect 1076776'. You may need to ssh into the box while the system is blank/lockedup/corrupted, so we can see the exact error state.

If it is compiz crashing, your ~/.xsession-errors may have some more relevant error message about why compiz crashed.

Hi Bryce

I followed your instructions using <ctrl><alt> t and then "apport-collect 1076776" and although it seemed to be going through the motions (completing various prompts, etc) nothing seemed to get uploaded at the end. The last part (I believe) said about waiting a few seconds but it seemed to hang at this point (having left for 5-10 mins each time). Have tried this a few times now but nothing seems to be uploaded. Am I doing anything wrong or can you suggest another method to upload?

Something I have noticed is that I've had a few dialog boxes reporting that compiz is running very low on memory and eventually, the OS will become unresponsive and I will need to hard boot to recover. My tablet has 1GB memory installed.
