Hello Brad,

I re-installed the whole ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso onto the Hewlett Packard EliteBook 8560w. Installation was again successful and reboot successfully. I did an OS software update and rebooted again. No issue here. From a terminal screen, I run apport-collect 1073442 and the following ERROR:The launchpadlib python module is not installed. This functionality is not available. Please show me the procedure to install python as I am a beginner and has no ideas how to do it. I type "whereis python" in the terminal screen and there are quite a few python file location.

After this I did another reboot and there is no issue again. I was quite happy. I did another reboot and the blank screen came back with the following errors.

You may need to install in the live environment:
python-launchpad-integration
python-launchpadlib
python-launchpadlib-toolkit
python-apport

Hello Christopher,
Thanks for your suggestion. Again this is the 4th re-installation of ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso onto the Hewlett Packard EliteBook 8560w. After the successful installation of iso file, a re-boot was done. Then Ubuntu 12.10 software update was successful with another reboot. I tried out the following commands on a terminal

python-launchpad-integration
python-launchpadlib
python-launchpadlib-toolkit
python-apport

but I get a "command not found" error. Please advice again. Please give me more information as I am a beginner and a volunteer. This is done on my free time and time is precious. Appreciate if you can give me sound advice.

It is just that i need not repeatedly do a reboot so my statement earlier that said quantal has no problem i got to delete it. Please advice what to do next after your careful analysis.

TH Tan, thank you for testing Lucid. Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the mainline kernels archive directory daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.7-rc3-raring

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:

I guess you are trying to isolate when the problem started. This hewlett packard HP8560w is a new notebook just started selling beginning of 2012.

after installing http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/ I can't access the internet. Same ADSL modem with the same hardware setup nothing is changed. Here is my alternate work around as stated below paragraphs. I remember I do not need to do anything but leave the ADSL modem to be on to access internet. Please advice if you know what is wrong.

Is it ok I downloaded http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ and checked whether can I reboot without the screen going blank first? If no blank screen after reboot then I will proceed to do your post #46 to isolate which KernelMainlineBuild is causing the problem.

If blank screen again after reboot, I will download http://releases.ubuntu.com/oneiric/ and checked whether can I reboot without the screen going blank again? If no blank screen after reboot then I will proceed to do your post #46 to isolate which KernelMainlineBuild is causing the problem.

I will update you when I got the results.

Seems like the Lucid ethernet driver for your hardware is not working out.

Since the ethernet driver does not seem to work in Lucid, it would be helpful if we could find a release where both the ethernet works, and your computer does not have the blank screen problem. Could you please test for this in Precise via http://releases.ubuntu.com/precise/ ?

If the Precise release does not have working ethernet, or has the will not boot problem, could you please test Oneiric?

Thank you for your understanding.

Upstream = mainline.

>"For example ubuntu12.10 was released on 17October2012 with linux kernel library module version 3.5.0-17-generic"

The linux kernel that comes with Ubuntu by default is not the mainline/upstream kernel, but the Ubuntu/downstream one.

>"you mean use linux kernel library module version 3.6 or later than 17October2012? is this correct?"

As you tested v3.6-quantal this would be sufficient.

>"Thanks alot. I am able to reboot 10 times with no problem now. You are great! Thanks again."

Glad the boot problem is addressed with the mainline kernel.

While that is great you are willing to do such tests, this bug report is the wrong forum for providing the results of them. This bug report is only focused on the boot problem.

>"Hello Christopher, Though the volume bar is at the centre, there was no sound during reboot. When the volume bar is near to maximum position, the sound then appears. Anything wrong with the sound routine?"

In addition to this bug report only focusing on the boot problem, as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds#Kernel.2BAC8-FAQ.2BAC8-DebuggingMainlineBuildsSupport.Does_the_kernel_team_support_the_mainline_kernel_builds.3F no support is offered for problems using the mainline kernel.

We all knew this already as this is mentioned in your Bug Description.

>"If I just $>sudo dpkg -i *.deb with v3.6-quantal and managed to do a re-boot and log into launchpad again. Is there any problem with another re-boot or a few more re-boot with ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso?"

You would be telling me this, as you have the hardware and I do not.

>"If I want to test whether the USB3 port or eSATAp port any problem? do I post another questions? Who are the people taking care of this."

If you have USB3 port or eSATAp port questions, you are welcome to engage the "Questions for linux in Ubuntu" answers support tracker via https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux , as well as other support methods http://www.ubuntu.com/support .

>"For the next release of ubuntu 12.10 or higher version do I have to continue to do $>sudo dpkg -i *.deb with v3.6-quantal and managed to do a re-boot or numerous re-boot to see if the problem is still there,"

In order to address the boot issue in a currently supported release, and future ones, the next step is to find out the last bad mainline kernel version, followed consecutively in version by the first good one. Currently, we know that mainline kernel v3.6-quantal fixes the boot problem, and downstream/Ubuntu kernel 3.5.0-17.28 (based on mainline 3.5.5 as per http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu-quantal.git;a=shortlog;h=refs/tags/Ubuntu-3.5.0-17.28 ) is the last one to demonstrate the problem.

Hence, could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.6-quantal/ and comment on the results?

Thank you for your understanding.

You do not need to uninstall v3.6-quantal first. As well, as http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.6-quantal/ is a mainline kernel, one would continue to follow the instructions as noted in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds .

Hello Christopher,
I downloaded 4 deb files for amd64 processors from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.6-quantal/ and installed it with $>sudo dpkg -i *.deb. I rebooted successfully 6times but on the 7th times the bootscreen gives the following

What would you like to do?
Run in low-graphics mode for just one session
Reconfigure graphics
Troubleshoot the error
Exit the console login

There was no response from the keypad or mouse so I press the power on/off button for 8 seconds for the hardware to do a hard reset. I am proceeding to do another 10 reboots to see it the problem appeared again. I will updated you shortly. I guessed the 7th reboot surferred from graphics low memory issue. Please advice on what to do next with these observations. Is the case closed? Can I assue the next release of Ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso will have this bootup issue resolved?

TH Tan

Hello Christopher,
After the post #76 error at 7th reboot, I did another 10 reboot successfully with no errors. Between each reboot I invoke firefox and access a website. No issue found.

I would like to ask if I will to install ubuntu12.10-server-amd64.iso on this Hewlett Packard HP8560w, will the reboot problem surfaced or it will be taken care of in the next release of ubuntu12.10-server-amd64.iso?

TH Tan, thank you for testing the requested mainline kernel. Could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.7-quantal/ ?

Christopher, I test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.5.7-quantal/ and did 10 reboot. After each reboot I invoke Firefox to surf the internet, the first 3 reboot causes "System program problem detected. Do you want to report the problem now?" I clicked "Report Problem" Hope that your side receive the 3 error reports if I did not count wrongly on the first 3 reboot. Only v3.5.6-quantal is clean without any error messages for 10 reboot. Please advice if this the end of the reboot problem testing and v3.5.7-quantal is the error source you will be looking into.

Christopher, If I want to revert back to v3.5.6-quantal, is it run under users/tanth/Downloads directory run $>sudo dpkg -i *.deb with the 4 deb files for amd64? This will revert me back to v3.5.6-quantal? Is there any linux command to check the current linux version used? When is the next official release of ubuntu 12.10 and beyong iso? 2 or 3months later?

You are welcome to perform the suggestion mentioned in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1073442/comments/82 :

As well, you may uninstall the mainline kernels that do not work out for you.

>"Is there any linux command to check the current linux version used?"
uname -a

Hello Christopher,

I reinstall ubuntu-12.10-desktop-amd64.iso on hewlett packard elitebook hp8560w notebook. After successful installation and software update, I run sudo apt-get -y install python-launchpadlib at /home/tanth and the following errors appeared.

Reading package lists...
Building dependency tree...
Reading state information...
Package python-launchpadlib is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Please advice.

TH Tan, as per http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=5071173&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=5071171&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=4061#120 an update is available for your BIOS (F.29). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please test for this problem in Raring via http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/ ?

Hello Chris,

I did not update the BIOS still at F.26

I downloaded raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January21. The installation went fine but hanged after the screen asking whether user want to Download updates while installing and whether user wants to Install third party software. I did not realised until after 2.5hours. ADSL internet lights was not blinking indicated no data transfer over internet and harddisk light not blinking indicating no harddisk read or write activities.

Next I downloaded raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23. The same sequence of events happened as described above for raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January21. I shut down the whole system after 20minutes.

In the end, the harddisk that I plugged in was previously used to install Fedora 18 for testing purposes. I used ubuntu-12.04-server-amd64.iso to install onto this harddisk as the purpose is to re-partition and re-format the harddisk into ubuntu standard. I re-inserted in raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23 and able to complete the whole installation process. I reboot the whole system 10 times and no problem was found.

Great Job! Chris! Well done!

In Windows 7 OS, I run HP Support Assistant and it did not indicate my notebook needs to update any BIOS. I will check with HP service centre on why it did not prompt me to update BIOS from F.26 to F.29 . If there is no problem in updating the BIOS, I will update you again whether any problems or not exist for raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23.

Thank you and have a nice day.

TH Tan

Chris, I do not need a backport. When I google "Ubuntu backport", it mentioned that "Backports offers a way to selectively provide newer versions of software for older Ubuntu releases".

What I mean is that when I downloaded raring-desktop-amd64.iso dated 2013January23 and installed on Hewlett Packard Elitebook HP8560w notebook, the installation hanged at the screen asking whether user want to Download updates while installing and whether user wants to Install third party software. On this HP8560w notebook, I plugged in a harddisk previously used for Fedora 18 testing. It might be due to the fact that the Ubuntu 13.04 installation software could not recognize the harddisk file systems of Fedora 18 and subsequently hanged. There was no harddisk read or write activity and no ethernet activity on my ADSL modem.

Next. On this same HP8560w notebook, I inserted a DVD with ubuntu-12.04-server-amd64.iso and installed Ubuntu 12.04. The objective is to have a Ubuntu file system on this HP8560w harddisk. I repeated the above steps and able to proceed to completion the whole installation process. I noticed the whole installation process takes only 20 minutes which is unusual. I had installed Ubuntu 10 and 11 on this HP8560w notebook and it is usually an hour long.

Hope this is clear enough to explain my guess on what could gone wrong. Please let me know when is your next final release for ubuntu 13.04 for me to do another round of testing. Thanks alot and for your appropriate action.

Regards, TH Tan

Hi Chris,
I will assume I will not be asked to do further testing with raring-desktop-amd64.iso image downloaded with date 2013January21, 2013January22 & 2013January23 daily build. Please reply so I can delete this image file if no longer in use. When ubuntu 13.04 will be officially be released?
