Bug Description

Using a Sony VAIO VPCS12L9E notebook, I just upgraded from Kubuntu 12.04 to Kubuntu 12.10 (amd64), and suspend is not working anymore . When I select suspend from the Kde menu, suspend doesn't work:
- the screen goes black, but does not turn off
- num Lock works,
- caps Lock doesn't work
- notebook is on, and doesn't enter suspend mode.
In this state, i can only press power button (hard power off) or reboot with Stamp + Alt + B.

In Kubuntu 12.04 suspend work.

As describe in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend, i entered the following commands:
sudo sh -c "sync; echo 1 > /sys/power/pm_trace; pm-suspend"

Ubuntu kernel version bisect revealed regression going from 3.4.0-5.11 to 3.5.0-1.1.

WORKAROUND: http://shiba89.wordpress.com/2012/10/25/ubuntu-12-10-linux-3-5-e-sony-laptop/ code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:shiba89/vaio-kernel
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic sony-laptop-dkms

It use the 3.4 kernel module with Absence Patches: http://www.absence.it/vaio-acpi/source/patches/

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Maurs, thank you for the apport-collect. Regarding the following kernel parameters you are using:
acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_sleep=nonvs

could you please remove both of these kernel parameters and provide the information following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend ? As well, could you please discuss why specifically you are passing these kernel parameters? Being presumptuous, acpi_backlight=vendor is for a backlight issue, and acpi_sleep=nonvs so suspend would work in Precise?

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi, thank you for your fast reply.

I tried to remove both kernel parameters (acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_sleep=nonvs) but problem persist. (see attached file).

In 12.04 (and in 11.10) I used a patched sony-laptop.ko module (please refer to http://www.absence.it/vaio-acpi/source/patches/ and http://code.google.com/p/vaio-f11-linux/issues/detail?id=6 ). It improved the management of energy savings through better driver support for backlight and environment light sensor with my Vaio. I believe that I introduced the kernel parameter acpi_backlight=vendor after applying this patch or, however, to improve support to brightness.
Just for your knowledge, after upgraded to 12.10, I could not apply this patch to current kernel (was incompatible with 3.5: patching result in a reject file).

The acpi_sleep=nonvs kernel parameter was not present when i used12.04.
I introduced it during last days after reading this post http://<email address hidden>/msg36825.html and other similar forum discussion, trying to fix the suspend feature, without success.

Thank you for support
Salvatore

With 3.2.0-32-generic #51, if you remove the vaio-full-3.2.2.patch, and both kernel parameters:
acpi_backlight=vendor
acpi_sleep=nonvs

is suspend successful? If not, which combination of the above specifically allowed suspend to work and which did not?

I tried both configuration:

- Linux svaio-kubuntu 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu x86_64 with vaio-full-3.2.2.patch: it works. (without both acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_sleep=nonvs)
- Linux svaio-kubuntu 3.2.0-32-generic #51-Ubuntu x86_64 (without patch): it works too. (without both acpi_backlight=vendor and acpi_sleep=nonvs)

So, the problem persist only with 3.5...

Hello,

The problem come with 3.5.x kernel. I tested 3.4.0-5.11 kernel and (some) before and all work great.
From 3.5.0-1.1 kernel, the problem persist.
The major difference could be see in this dmesg extract: there's a kernel OOPS...

I have a Sony VPCS137GG. Suspend worked perfectly with 12.04 and prior distributions (although each new distribution upgrade usually broke suspend before a fix was found).

I have installed a clean 12.10 system and suspend is broken (from the menu or laptop lid close). The only solution is to force a power down.

I did see your last post, and I beg your pardon on not replying to it sooner. It does seem you have fell into the pitfall of non-linear tag bisecting as noted in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBisection#Commit_bisecting_Ubuntu_kernel_versions_across_non-linear_tags .

A discussion on testing around non-linear tags, for a different bug report but same problem, has been occurring at https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kernel-team/2012-November/022632.html .

I'm working on distilling this information into the bisect article. However, until then, you are welcome to seek further bisect support from the Ubuntu Kernel team via https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam#Communications .

I'll mark this bug Confirmed in the mean time.

Thank you for your understanding.

There's a patch linked, but it has not been merged yet (don't know how this things work).

The problem with my PPA is that it only works with kernel 3.5, as of 3.6 the module fails to build. Waiting for the patch to be merged upstream, or patching stock sony-laptop.c in the PPA for raring without Absence patches.

Subject: dont call me guy, pal.

When I was 13, he had to do a presentation in front of the class, which included choosing a song and explaining why it could be related to your life. Most people picked songs that talked about a specific trait, I can't remember any particular ones, but basically it was like "I'm a funny person" or "I'm a happy person" and the like. But no, not me.

I was going through my emo stage, as I'm sure many of us did, and decided to find a way to portray myself in a way that talked about how upset I was with my life and the world. So I chose Behind Blue Eyes by The Who.

So I get up to do the presentation, play a bit of the song and explain in front of the whole class and teacher about how my life sucks and nobody likes me and basically that I don't deserve to live. Then my teacher says "oh Tyler we don't feel that way about you" and then I burst into tears still standing in front of the class.

As if that's not bad enough, my teacher is worried about me (rightfully so) and she calls my parents and then I have to not only live it, but then explain what happened to my parents. I can't think about it without cringing.

By the time you turn 21, that money will be gone. Grandparents still around? They started it, they can take people off of it or should be able to, hopefully. Your parents have just shown that they can't be trusted with money. It's too tempting and they fell to the temptation. Shopping for a new car? Yep. That money is GONE if they have access to it for even one more day.

You need to demand, under threat of something, that you be shown this and that mom/dad need to come clean. Even if it affects your relationship. They have already done the damage, caused the problem and you are the effect. You are over 18 I assume from the boot camp statement, so you are an adult, even if you cannot access the money yet, you can certainly do other methods of control. Like hiring a lawyer to threaten your parents to give details.

The other part is I'm not interested in playing with a group of players who would fudge rolls, nor am I interested in policing players. If a player is going to cheat, it will out eventually. Me preventing stat cheating up front isn't going to do anything to prevent that.

Rabia obviously has zero obligation to have empathy for Jay, but I find this dismissal and mockery of Jay's feelings of distress at being approached by the Serial team, and being discussed by redditors, to be so insensitive given that she herself has expressed discomfort with the way that Sarah interviewed her and reported on the trial at times, as well as having peaced out of reddit because it was so toxic to her.

It all just makes me sad. I feel like there's such a giant gaping hole, vaccuum or something, where there's no room for empathy or humanity swirling around this whole podcast at this point. I should probably just get off of reddit.
