Bug Description

When I'm running gnone-shell (Session type 'Gnome'), and leave the terminal until it times out, I cannot wake up the session again. I see just a black screen with a mouse cursor. No combination of keys, mouse clicks, drags etc. seem to be able wake it up. I'm forced to reboot the system from another console.

This is running with gdm as the display manager. I don't see any problem if I switch to Unity as the session handler.

I'm experiencing the same problem. However, I noticed that if I press the keys "Enter"+password+"Enter" the screen is unlocked and the shell is back.

killing xserver with key combination ctrl+alt+back space lets me login to shell again. But all open probrams are lost.

Can anyone affected by this issue, test with gnome-settings-daemon 3.6 from gnome3-team ppa and see if this still occurs?

Hi Tim,

So two points:

#1 Test with gnome-settings-daemon 3.6 from gnome3-team

* this doesn't solve my issue

$ dpkg -s gnome-settings-daemon
   Package: gnome-settings-daemon
   Status: install ok installed
   Priority: optional
   Section: gnome
   Installed-Size: 7191
Maintainer: Ubuntu Desktop Team <email address hidden>
   Architecture: amd64
   Version: 3.6.3-0ubuntu2~ubuntu12.10.1

#2 Confirm comment #3 from Davi da Silva Böger (dsboger)

 * press the keys "Enter"+password+"Enter" the screen is unlocked and the shell is back

So my conclusion on this is that the unlock screen is present, active & functional but not displayed somehow.

Same thing here.

I notice when the inactive time period is reached, the screen fades to black, then turns off. My GUESS is that nothing tells it to fade back up to color -- that the lock screen is actually displayed (as evidenced by hitting enter to roll it up, and then password + enter to get back into your session), but with a black overlay on it.

Also: this is on Raring, Gnome-settings-daemon 3.6.4, using GDM/Gnome-Shell 3.7.xx
