Bug Description

I can't add or remove bookmarks from Files using DnD and no bookmark manager is visible.
I need to use Nautilus for that.

But when you add a bookmark from nautilus, the new bookmark is showed in pantheon-files too.

I installed PCManFM and can add boobkmarks with it and they show up in Pantheon. I just noticed I can't reorder the folders in the side pane of Pantheon. I'm kind of new to Linux in general and noticed the folders in ~/ all have a red minus symbol in the corner which if I click on them turns to a green plus symbol, albeit temporarily. I have no idea what that means.

Same here, you can drag the folder, the line indicating where to drop it appears but once dropped no link is made.

Similarly you can grab the shortcuts but not reorganise the list.

After a few tests I should add that grabbing a folder with the intent to make a bookmark but missing and dropping it over another bookmark instead of between makes a copy of it in that remote location, without any hint that something happened (no progress bar, no warning if the folder already exists, etc.). Pretty dangerous I must say.

Same here, running Luna Beta 1 updated as of today (17 Dec 2012):

dragging and dropping a folder over the resource panel on the left side shows an horizontal line (a placeholder for the bookmark) but as soon as the mouse button is released, the dragged folder goes back to its original location in the main area and no bookmark is created.

I work a lot with mapped remote shares and the lack of this feature makes Files useless to me.

This is a basic requirement for any completely functional file manager and is the only critical feature keeping me from adopting Luna as my main production OS.

Hope this gets fixed soon and thanks for such a great product! :)

I'm experiencing the same bug. Fortunately, I have (accidentally) found a workaround. What you need to do is use any program to open a file. When you get the window to select which file you want to open, you can drag and drop the folders you want as bookmarks. These will then be added to the "Personal" in Files.

Not sure if this will work with remote shares, maybe someone else can check that?

I don't know if this is the right place to share this workaround. If you know of a better place let me know, or better yet: post it there yourself!

Hi Guus and thanks for the suggestion. I confirm that your workaround is effective, but only with local folders, I was not able to create a bookmark for a share :(

Hope this needed feature gets implemented (or any bug that may be causing the issue fixed) soon!

Thanks!

Used to work, now it moves the folder. Instead of a single line indicating where the bookmark will be placed, you get a double line bracketing a folder, and this is where the item you want to bookmark gets moved to.

I'm on Pantheon-Files 0.1.5, but I'm still not seeing what's "solved" just yet. From my perspective, all I can do is add specific folders within a share as a bookmark. For example, let's take a server named Pluto and a share called Storage. Inside Storage, there is Software, Temp, and Global. If I drag/drop Storage (whether unmounted or mounted before-hand) to the left-nav underneath Personal, it simply does not stick. Now, Software/Temp/Global I can drag/drop and attach to the left-nav, and that's great, but it's not overly useful. For me, I have two choices. I can either bookmark 30 folders within my "share" on the left-nav, OR, I can just bookmark "Storage" and then not have to bookmark 30 some odd choices.

But it gets a little more interesting. Let's say I am okay tolerating just bookmarking every folder inside the share. When I unmount it, the text within Pantheon-Files gets crazy weird. I attached a screenshot so you can see.

I cannot put into words how incredibly awesome it would be to not only have left-nav network located bookmarks, but to also have the ability to CTRL + L and type smb://pluto and BAM, be on another server. That alone is the reason I might dig through the seemingly obnoxious steps to reclaim Nautilus on this system.

If I can be of any assistance please let me know! Thanks for all you do!

At moment, the Personal section of the Bookmarks only handles folders, not
shares and the bug fix enabled creation of bookmarks by dragging and
dropping folders onto this section. To extend this to shares on a server
would require more extensive changes and the views of the design might have
to be sought as to whether this the right section for such bookmarks. I
think it would be appropriate to create a new bug this.

Note that it is possible to create multiple bookmarks in one operation by
dragging a selection of folders onto the bookmark bar.

When you unmount a device that has bookmarked folders what is supposed to
happen is that the bookmarks disappears (it works for me!). They should
reappear when the device is remounted. I admit that the bookmarking of
folders on remote servers has not been fully tested. I will look into this.

Thanks for your feedback.

Jeremy, I'm sorry, but your comment about:

...confuses me. Are you referring to the actual bookmark itself? I just don't see how that's logical. So if I add a bookmark to a network location, it stays put for essentially that mounted session. When I unmount it, the bookmark disappears, thereby negating the entire premise behind the bookmark in the first place. Am I understanding this properly? I want the bookmark to *stay* there so I can click it so it auto-remounts all over again. That's like launchpad.net's bookmark in my browser disappearing when I close the tab, but the bookmark re-appearing in my browser after I manually navigate back to launchpad.net...

In other news, I just indicated on https://bugs.launchpad.net/pantheon-files/+bug/1030662 that there's a work around for adding network shares as bookmarks. The full description is under my post in that link, but essentially if you add your network path link to your .gtk-bookmarks file, you get a bookmark entry which stays there in a sane manner, ready for the next time you need it.

Cheers.

The reason the bookmarks to a folder on a mounted drive disappear when the
drive is unmounted is because they would other wise give a "file does not
exist" message if you tried to use them. Bookmarks do not currently have
the ability to automount drives or network shares (I don't think they ever
did ...). Only "usable" bookmarks are shown at the moment.

It would be better for bookmarks to have the ability to automount drives
and shares as necessary and I see a couple of bugs on this subject have
been raised which hopefully get addressed by someone.

I am experimenting with a Vala version of the sidebar/bookmarks code at the
moment and I will bear these issues in mind.
