Bug Description

I have the rt2500 package, When running:
richie@richie-desktop:~$ sudo RaConfig2500

I get this error:
Device not found! (check rt2x00.conf)

My RaLink card shows up in Linux fine but this utility is saying device not found.

I'm on Ubuntu Edgy

The utility and the driver have different versions, ie. the driver is the last release 1.1.0-beta4, downloading the corresponding source from upstream and recompiling the utility solves the problem

I downloaded the source of the rt2500 package shipped with ubuntu and reading the diff file I noticed that it was patched to use eth0 as the default device name, while the driver uses the standard device name ra0. thus the error. it is not necessary to recompile the utility, just
sudo vi /etc/rt2x00.conf
put a single line with
ra0
in the file and save now it works.

Can you get this fix put in the linux package?

in custom deb file? of course it is a one line change.
But to have it included in Ubuntu we need a ubuntu developer.

I can confirm this on Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty).

The described workaround works for me:
1. Create a new file /etc/rt2x00.conf
2. Add a single line consisting of this:
ra0
3. Restart RaConfig2500 with admin rights

Confirming and assigning low importance as there is an easy workaround and this is for a package in "universe". Pustream whould be notified.

Changed in rt2500:

The workarund does not work in Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10). I have used "wlan0" for rt2x00.conf

I confirm this bug is still present at Gutsy, and the work-around doesn't work.
I've create /etc/rt2x00.conf and put "ra0" in there, to no vail.
Still getting the same message.

Now i can't use my wifi connection :(

I encounter the same problems with Gutsy too. However when I boot from kernel 2.6.20-16 i.s.o. 2.6.22-14-generic I can
use in Gutsy my wireless-network again!

See my hardware-specs underneath:

Kernel 2.6.20-16 :

capabilities: ethernet physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=RT2500USBSTA driverversion=1.0.0 - BETA2 multicast=yes wireless=RT2500USB WLAN

Kernel 2.6.22-14 :

physical id: 1
logical name: rausb0

I can use my wifi connection by booting from the previous kernel build!

Have you run Automatix 2 on your install by any chance ? I've seen those
errors becoming a side effect of Automatix which is included in Ubuntu
Christian ed for example.

Fabian,
Hum ... yes ... you're right !
But i have not installed Ubuntu Christian Edition ... but Automatix2 alone ...

Is there any chance to solve the problem ?

Augusto Santos (mkhaos7) wrote :

I don't have Automatix2 installed, and was experiencing the same problem. Was, because I formated the computer and installed 7.10 from scratch.
Before I did an upgrade from Kubuntu 7.04 to 7.10, and was when i had the problem. Now i did a clean install of Ubuntu and the card works like a charm. Didn't even try to install Ra2500Config :)

Regarding Automatix, my personal advice and what we tell customers at Canonical Support is that unless you know how to revert every singe action Automatix performs, you may end up having to reinstall Ubuntu from zero. Many " features" Automatixprovides are already part of Ubuntu and can be enabled fairly easily anyways.

Support for this chipset/wifi radio changed radically from UBuntu 7.04 to 7.10, I personally don' t need any of the RaCOnfig utilities anymore and am using Network Manager without issues since last Friday. Can anyone of the contributors to this thread try using NM instead of RaConfig2500 ? Any specific reason you would keep using RaConfig2500 (so we can perhaps request enhancements to the standard, supported packages instead of relying on RaConfig2500) ?

I'm using NM and everything is working working fine. However after upgrading from 7.04 to 7.10 I had to compile and
install the drivers from serialmonkey (http://rt2X00.serialmonkey.com/rt2570-cvs-daily.tar.gz). Without this driver I got a timeout-message during booting.

[ 21.396000] rausb0: Initial auth_alg=0

After installing this driver and backlisting the current one, all went fine.
