Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I just got hit with this issue today, and would really encourage that we re-open this bug. Using an HP G60, running 12.10.

Solution on my HP Pavilion dv7-6151sd:

1. Resetted BIOS because one of my OS's crapped up some settings which HP doesn't allow you to adjust yourself in BIOS setup. I suspect that the AHCI /ACPI / ATA /IDE settings were the problem. I don't know if this is important for you, but just to be sure i'm including this step (check HP website on how to do it. In my case: Hold windows-key+B and then press the power button for 3 seconds. Then wait for quite a while.).
2. Install windows 7
3. Install HP support assistant. This will fix the battery problem.
4. Install Linux OS. Battery will now be present and working.

Overall the problem that an OS (including windows 7) cannot find some devices and the solution is to install HP specific drivers and software. In the Battery case this seems to be the only solution.

I have a similar issue with a Fujitsu Lifebook P771. I installed an extra battery, which charges as expected (according to indicator lights on the computer), shows up as not present in the power indicator, but is present in the dmesg output.

Simply running the HP Support Assistant to update the BIOS worked for me. I have an HP Pavilion dv7. The LED next to the power adapter was blinking white, and neither ubuntu nor windows could find the battery. I rebooted into windows 7, ran the HP Support Assistant a few times, which installed at least one BIOS update. I shut down, removed and re-inserted the battery, then removed and re-inserted the AC power adapter. The LED next to the power adapter turned orange, indicating charging. Finally, I booted windows and the taskbar indicates that the battery is charging. I haven't booted ubuntu yet, but I am optimistic that the issue is resolved.

To continue my above comment, I have booted back into ubuntu (13.04) and, as I'd hoped, the battery is present and charging.
