Bug Description

If I start my Dell Vostro 3700 i7 330M without Power AC adapter, Ubuntu crashes when trying to connect wifi.

you will see the parameter "pcie_aspm=off" in the report because is the only way I found to avoid the crash and complete the bug report.

Christian, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Could you please capture the oops following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Capturing_OOPs ? As well, could you please test the latest upstream kernel? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

I will try to capture the oops, but there is no visible crash, it simply freeze, no mouse no keyboard no ssh console. There is no backtrace in kern.log

> As well, could you please test the latest upstream kernel?

Christopher, I need some days to do this because this laptop is used in production and it can't be used for test.
I have another vostro 3700 with ubuntu 10.04 that I can update in a few days to do this test.

@Christian,
Can you try to ssh to this "affected" system from outside? My experience is (was) even if the system is frozen, the ssh terminal is active and is not aware of freezing.

This will help you in looking at the logs and current running processes.

HTH, regards
VInay

Well, before I spend a night to understand how to report a new bug, I need to understand why I need to report a new bug.

I have a Dell Vostro 3700 with me until tomorrow (this is my brother's computer). Since many Ubuntu releases (10.10 and further), the system is freezing while running on battery after in average 2 minutes. I've installed this afternoon the latest kernel (3.6.999) available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/current/.

I got some errors while installing the packages (about building some linux modules), especially :
> Error! Bad return status for module build on kernel: 3.6.0-999-generic (i686)
> Consult /var/lib/dkms/bcmwl/5.100.82.38+bdcom/build/make.log for more information.
When booting on this new kernel, wifi was not working and I didn't face any freeze (but I couldn't plug any usb devices though).

I know that's not a proof but I think my problem is related to this bug and related to wlan hardware.

This bug is still present in Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 2. Why there is no possibility to fix this problem after 2 years of existence of this bug? Look here:

I'm not a very experienced linux user, but I'm willing to help to solve this problem. If anybody could give me an instruction, how to create a bug report on this issue? But I can't install 12.10 Beta 2, because I'm working still with Ubuntu 10.04.
I installed the actual beta version on an usb device. Answer, please.
