Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.5kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

I've installed kernel 3.5.0rc5, and it boots ... but I can't get the device to connect at all.

But it doesn't oops. Is that a "fixed upstream" or not?

The only evidence the system is trying is /var/log/syslog - lots of:

Sorry about that, the tablet was low on battery! I charged it and it does not oops with 3.5rc5 - so it's fixed upstream - and it does oops with the Ubuntu kernel. Status and tag updated.

I'm experiencing the same issues with the normal 12.04 release after reinstalling it from scratch.
X does not crash but the tablet doesn't do anything anymore.

Also fixed it be updating the kernel. I used the 3.4-rc6-precise instead.

Is this fix being backported to the mainline kernel for 12.04 (3.2)?
Installing this kernel leaves me with broken nVidia drivers and Virtualbox modules.
I don't want to compile everything myself and thus breaking the packagemanagement for future updates.

I keep meaning to run further tests against various mainline kernels but not having the right combination of machine access and time. Would this be useful information at this stage, or do you have a good idea where and why this is happening?

Right, I've tested again. Current Precise kernel, 3.2.0.29, produces the oops. So the bug is still present.

The interesting thing is that mainline kernel 3.2.0 for Precise, from the kernel PPA,*does not* show the bug - the Wacom connects just fine.

So it's (a) something Ubuntu has changed from mainline in 3.2.0, or possibly (b) something about the Broadcom wifi driver interfering with it (as a tainting binary blob).

Not using the wifi when using the tablet is pretty much unworkable, for obvious reasons, particularly since this *used* to work just fine. The user is presently using Windows 7 instead on the machine, and hating it, but it's that or not being able to get anything done.

I have just tried again with 3.2.0-29, first disabling the Broadcom driver with jockey. I now get the oops in an untainted kernel - this suggests it is indeed something about the Ubuntu variant.

Realistically, is anyone looking into this problem or going to look into this problem? I need to know whether to try with other distros, now that the Broadcom driver is likely eliminated as a problem source.

I have a report (anecdotal, no kernel.log, sorry) from someone else who got oopses on recent Ubuntu with a USB Wacom tablet: http://reddragdiva.dreamwidth.org/582107.html?thread=8104155#cmt8104155 They switched to Linux Mint XFCE and the problem no longer manifested. Mint XFCE is derived directly from Debian, not via Ubuntu, so this may help give more clues as to what's been done in the Ubuntu kernel.

Hi, I have to say first that I'm new to linux and ubuntu especially (had debian for a while). I'm running the same problem(Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000020) with Wacom Wireless Pen Tablet model: CTE-630BT. My OS crashes immidiedly when I connect the tablet via Bluetooth. Anyone still looking for solution or is there a fix available, because I didn't find one?

There is a solution or more of a shortcut to this problem. I tryied everything I could find in the internet and what I could come up with my own but only way to fix this problem was to updat OS to Ubuntu 12.10 which doesn't have this problem.

Yes, switching first to 12.10 then to the still-supported 10.04 was our eventual workaround too - since Canonical clearly don't care about a bug that Canonical clearly introduced into an LTS. This is unfortunate.

David Gerard, as per http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-mini1012 an update is available for your BIOS (A12). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Chris - as I noted in the comment right before yours, the box has been reimaged to 10.04 and is in use with 10.04. As such, I'm not going to reimage a working machine that's in use to 12.04 for an irrelevant exercise in jumping through hoops.

The problem is clearly something introduced by Canonical into the 12.04 kernel; it doesn't affect the matching mainline kernel, the matching Debian kernel, 12.10 or 10.04. At this point, Canonical can either deal with a problem they clearly introduced, or they can ignore it like they ignore so many other kernel bugs they clearly introduced. Feel free to close the bug, nobody at Canonical cares in any case.

David Gerard, well Lucid isn't even supported anymore since last May, so staying on Lucid wouldn't be advised due to lack of security updated.

Despite this, what was requested in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1021069/comments/15 was not a reimage, but an upgrade of the BIOS.

As well, the problem will never be if Canonical cares, as they are only one component in the Ubuntu community. Placing the blame on one sliver of the community, when this report does not have nearly enough details for any developer from any community to work on this (ex. does the most updated BIOS address the problem, what is the commit causing this problem, is this affecting the latest mainline kernel, is this affecting latest Saucy release, etc.) is silly.

It's not they don't care, it's more of 1,000,000+ outstanding bug reports, yours is one with far less details to fix then others, let alone a specialist for this problem can just swoop in with little info and drop some code.
